XFree86 4.2.99 is supposedly the same code as 4.3 which is coming out in a few days. I was forced to try 4.2.99, as 4.21 and earlier DO NOT support my PNY Geforce4 MX420 properly, either with the nv driver or the Nvidia proprietary drivers (I have tried every hint on every bulletin board with the latter; have given up on the proprietary drivers. The nv driver in 4.2.99 DOES WORK and has all the capabilities I need (2D). That's what I'm using now).
There are some problems with this combination, though. I have to boot using failsafe into text/network and then type KDE. Doing it any other way hangs the machine right after the Nvidia logo comes up. But the failsafe way ends up with KDE 3.1 displayed normally. It doesn't seem to matter whether devfs is enabled or not. Most things like browsers and editors work fine. But there are some serious problems. Mandrake Control Center (mcc) hangs KDE instantly, as does xawtv (even after recompiling). Audio volume controls such as kmix don't work -- they don't seem connected to the sound source. After booting 9.0 into text mode, I can hear the audio from my ATI TV tuner card, but the Kmix volume control doesn't affect the volume. Has anyone else tested a similar combination (especially the new X?). I don't think that KDE 3.1 has any bearing on it. The same things were happening with 3.0.5. Please no suggestions to get the Nvidia proprietary drivers to work; I am using nv for the foreseeable future. Last edited by bearwash; 02-21-03 at 11:17 PM. |

If you are seeing an nVidia logo, then AFAIK, you are not using Driver "nv".
Perhaps this might explain some of the things you're seeing? ![]()

Hi bw,
When I said "Nvidia Logo" I really meant the four or five text lines that the video bios puts in the upper left part of the screen. There isn't any graphics-type Nvidia logo. Also, the X log does show "nv". For those who might be interested, here is the driver load message. I had never seen geforce 4 listed before this version. II) NV: driver for NVIDIA chipsets: RIVA 128, RIVA TNT, RIVA TNT2, Vanta, RIVA TNT2 Ultra, RIVA TNT2 Model 64, Aladdin TNT2, GeForce 256, GeForce DDR, Quadro, GeForce2 MX/MX 400, GeForce2 MX 100/200, GeForce2 Go, Quadro2 MXR/EX/Go, GeForce2 Integrated GPU, GeForce2 GTS, GeForce2 Ti, GeForce2 Ultra, Quadro2 Pro, GeForce4 MX 460, GeForce4 MX 440, GeForce4 MX 420, GeForce4 MX 440-SE, GeForce4 440 Go, GeForce4 420 Go, GeForce4 420 Go 32M, GeForce4 460 Go, GeForce4 440 Go 64M, GeForce4 410 Go 16M, Quadro4 500 GoGL, Quadro4 550 XGL, Quadro4 NVS, GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X, GeForce4 MX 440SE with AGP8X, GeForce4 MX 420 with AGP8X, GeForce4 448 Go, GeForce4 488 Go, Quadro4 580 XGL, Quadro4 280 NVS, Quadro4 380 XGL, GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU, GeForce3, GeForce3 Ti 200, GeForce3 Ti 500, Quadro DCC, GeForce4 Ti 4600, GeForce4 Ti 4400, 0x0252, GeForce4 Ti 4200, Quadro4 900 XGL, Quadro4 750 XGL, Quadro4 700 XGL, GeForce4 Ti 4800, GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X, GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE, GeForce4 4200 Go, Quadro4 700 GoGL, Quadro4 980 XGL, Quadro4 780 XGL, 0x0300, GeForce FX 5800 Ultra, GeForce FX 5800, Quadro FX 2000, Quadro FX 1000, 0x0311, 0x0312, 0x0316, 0x0317, 0x0318, 0x0319, 0x031A, 0x031B, 0x031C, 0x031D, 0x031E, 0x031F, 0x0321, 0x0322, 0x0323, 0x0326, 0x032A, 0x032B, 0x032E |
