You can try starting screen like this instead:
screen /dev/ttyS0 9600

which will explicitly set the speed. Also, try running this command on the system with the 6600GT:
echo "test" > /dev/ttyS0

you should see 'test' appear in your screen session on the other system. If you do not, then something basic in your setup isn't right.

Thanks,
Lonni

Ok, this is the output of dmesg | grep ttyS on The PC with GT6600

bootdata ok (command line is ro root=LABEL=/ console=ttyS0,9600 console=tty0 rhgb quiet )
Kernel command line: ro root=LABEL=/ console=ttyS0,9600 console=tty0 rhgb quiet
ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

Thats the output of the old pc:
ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

The rest doesnt work, nothing happens. Maybe the cable isnt right, how should a 0-Modem-cabel work? Pin 1 is connected to Pin 1, 2 to 2, etc... Or should it be a "crossover"

You should be using a null modem cable, not a crossover cable. I'm afraid I don't know the pin-outs for a null modem cable off the top of my head, the cables that I use don't require any special configuration, they just work when I plug them in.

If I had to guess, I'd say that your cable is bad, or incorrectly constructed.

I'd suggest removing the 'rhgb quiet' portions from grub, as I've seen that send alot of garbage data down a serial console.

AFAIK, a null-modem cable is a crossover cable. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_modem: "With a null modem connection the transmit and receive lines are crosslinked."

Technically speaking, sure, however from a standard usage standpoint, a crossover cable is traditionally category 5, whereas a null modem cable is not category 5.

I suppose if he's using one of the RS-232 to RJ45 connectors at both ends, then using a category 5 crossover cable would work.

Hm, i couldnt find a null-modem cable till now, but i installed gentoo and the crashes are gone. Thx for the help though, if you're interested in solving the problem, i still have my old setup and can try things that dont involve a nullmodemcable.
