my computer:
Ubuntu 5.10 for AMD64 custom linux 2.6.15 kernel nvidia 8178 driver + U122205 patch gcc-4.0 nvidia 7800gtx The driver works fine when I install it until I reboot it for the 2nd time then X crashes out during startup and wont restart manually. If I recompile/reinstall the nvidia driver it works fine till the 2nd reboot. Ive attached the nvidia bug report log. Any ideas what i could check? |

You probably had the driver installed that is packaged with Ubuntu. If so you have to remove the related packages with the --purge option.
sudo dpkg --purge nvidia-glx sudo dpkg --purge nvidia-kernel-common sudo dpkg --purge linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r` |

ah sorry forgot to mention that I removed those packages already back when I first downloaded the driver. I double checked anyway and found another I hadnt noticed before named nvidia-restricted-modules-common. guess ill find out shortly if that was it.
Ive also looked to see what modules are loading and i dont see anything obvious to me. I dont have fb support even loaded into the kernel so one of those modules is not loading. that was my first guess. thanks for the input. |

Do you have a PCI card or an AGP card? From you output it looks like you are using a PCI card. You might try using a different PCI slot if you have one available, and booting the kernel with noacpi and/or acpi=off
Seems as though linux does not handle interrupts very well on some motherboards due to the incomplete development of ACPI in linux. |

Did you check that there is nothing left related to the nvidia driver in the /etc/init.d directory?
