Default Problems with Dual Head

Hello,
I've been trying desperately now for the last week or so to get my Ti4200 card to work in dual-head mode (non-twinview). My desire is to have the S-Video port be the primary display (on a 27" television) and the VGA port to be the secondary desktop on a 15" monitor. Everything I've tried has failed miserably using both 8178 and 7676 drivers. What happens is the desktop shows up on the Television (S-Video port) fine, but the CRT never shows anything. The LED on the monitor also turns yellow/orange like it's not getting a signal. I'm posting my xorg.conf and the Xorg.0.log files if that helps. Please, if anyone has any insight into why this is not working, I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Dave

Are you able to drive just the CRT (without the TV connected)?

Please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 5

and then generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,
Lonni

If I change the xorg.conf to be just CRT then, yes, I can drive just the CRT. I'll do what you suggest and create the bug report. Thanks.

Had to zip up the log file because it was too big, but here it is. Thanks.

I also tested that both the SVideo and the VGA ports work individually. I disconnected the VGA monitor and fired up X and the SVideo port came up. I shut down X, reconnected the monitor, and X fired up on the monitor (using the standard default Xorg.conf file, not my modified one). I just cannot get both working simultaneously.

In your X configuration I see:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT,TV"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV"

Can you explain why you're simultaneously instructing the driver to ignore and use a TV?

Then for the second X screen, you're doing it again:
(**) NVIDIA(1): Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT,TV"
(**) NVIDIA(1): Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT"

Please answer the following:
0) If you remove the IgnoreDisplayDevices option, does that have any impact?
1) Are both the CRT & TV plugged into the videocard when you boot the computer?
2) The X server isn't detecting an EDID (possibly due to your usage of IgnoreDisplayDevices) for the CRT, and as a result is using 800x600 (as you specified). What is the native resolution for the CRT that you're using? Are you able to get 800x600 when just the CRT alone is in use?

Thanks,
Lonni

Actually, if you look at my xorg.conf file, there is no option specified for "IgnoreDevices" so I don't know why that would be in the log files. Perhaps this is the problem?

Also, as I stated in the post prior to yours, both devices work independently of each other. If I start with the CRT attached, it fires up. If I start with the TV attached, it fires up as well (although MythTV over the TV isn't working right, but I'll address this issue once I've resolved the first one).

**** Edit ****

0) I can't remove what I didn't put in the xorg.conf file.
1) I only boot with the VGA monitor attached, though I start X with both attached.
2) Native resolution for the CRT is 800x600 for now, though it can go higher.

I didn't notice that and this could be a problem. I'll delete that file so it uses the proper on in /etc/X11. I'll let you know what my next test shows.

One question, should I reboot the server with both devices attached or is it sufficient that I start X with both attached?

I'd suggest testing with both to see if there is a difference in behavior.

Thanks,

Another log file and the config. The same thing happened in both trials.

At this point, I'm not seeing anything explicitly wrong in your bug report. The only other things that I can suggest to try at this point are:
0) Make sure that you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard applied
1) If you invert your X configuration such that the CRT is the first X screen, and the TV is the 2nd, does that have any impact?
2) If you use TwinView instead of separate X screens does that work?
3) If you change
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT"
to
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT-0"
does that help at all with your current X configuration?

Thanks,
Lonni
