Default NVIDIA installation -suse80- Problem!!!

Hello,

i have a problem with the installation of the NVIDIA-Driver.
First, here my System:
Distribution: Suse 8.0
Kernel: 2.2.12
XFree86: 4.2.0
Grafic: Elsa Erazor III Lt (RIVA TNT2 Model 64-Chip)
RPM-Files: NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.suse80.i386.rpm
NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.suse80.i386.rpm

I tried the following steps:
1) Install the Kernel-RPM
2) Install the GLX-Modul
3) run script switch2nvidia and switch2nvidia_glx
4) run SuSEconfig
5) run 3Ddiag (no error occurs)
6) controll the Lib-Links (all seems correct)
7) XF86Config seems to be correct (see attachment)
8) The kernel Module is loading correct (when i run lsmod nvidia appears)

Although all had to be correct, the following Problems occur:
1) After booting the screen is black (with Ctrl+Alt+F1 i reached console)
2) run startx (error):
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
3) run gears (error):
GLUT: Fatal Error in gears: could not open display :0.0
4) run glxinfo (error):
Error unable to open display
5) run xdpyinfo (error):
unable to open display
6) when i try to use sax2 and want to test my configuration (error):
(EE) LoadModul: Modul glx does not have a glxModuleData data object
(EE) Failed to load Module "glx" (invalid module, 0)

I hope you could help me with this problem.
Thank you

Regards,
Chris

P.S.: I could not try "YOU-Installation" because my internet connection is not working, too :-)

The last person that was having problems with SuSE and the "glxModuleData" error solved his problems in this thread:

Thanks for the link. But i tried this before.

I think my problem is more about "display".

Here some more Information from the messages-log-file:
kdm[871]: IO Error in XOpenDisplay
kdm[858]: Display :0 cannot be opened
kdm[858]: Display :0 is being disabled (restarting too fast)

it appears since i installed the nvidia driver.

Does anyone know something about NVIDIA and display-problems???

Thanks,

Regards
Chris

Attach your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file.

The "disabling because it's restarting too fast" message means that X is dying for some reason; the log file will show why.

According to the log, X is never dying.

Are you sure this is the log file from right after you get that message from init about respawning too fast?

Note that that log file gets overwritten every time X starts up, so if you're changing some configuration in order to get a GUI to post here, you're going to have to save the old log file, and not post the current one.

And don't paste it into your post. That's what the "attach file" section on the reply page is for -- attach it as a file instead, so that people that don't want (or don't need) to read it don't have to. You will have to rename it to end in .txt, but that shouldn't be too hard for you to accomplish...

Thanks for help so far.
This time i attached the files :-)

I attached the XFree86.0.log and the "tail" of the messages-log.

Both are from today right after booting.
When booting the system tries to load kdm and the gui-login. But this does not work.....the screen is black. Then i use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to login as root.
Then i copy both the XFree86.0.log and the tail of messages. So they are from the same session (see the same date)

Thanks for analysing my logs :-)

Regards
Chris

OK, WHOA.

Your kernel is either OOPSing or BUGging or something. In short, you hit a bug somewhere in kernel space. This could be in the nVidia kernel module, or it could be in the kernel itself. I'd need to see more of the messages log (and have your kernel, and your kernel source, and basically access to your machine) to find out for sure, so I won't try that, but more of the messages file would be a good thing. Something like "tail -n 300" or so.

But. Are you running the defaults SuSE kernel? One of their more recent versions had multiple bugs in its default kernel.

Hello,

i use the default SuSE 8.0 Kernel.
i think it's an nvidia-problem.

When i use the Suse "nv" driver, i am able to start KDE with startx without problems (but also without 3D).

I attached some larger messages Log-file.

Thanks
Chris

What happens when you /sbin/modprobe nvidia as root? Do you get the same "unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference" oops report? It'll be printed on your console if you have one active at the time.

Does installing 4191 from source work?

Does 3123 work?
