Thumbs down texture adapter "sync to vblank" causes system lockup

With my MSI 6200 card, enabling "sync to vblank" in nvidia-settings (which is the default, by the way) causes the system to hang when I use the XVideo extension.

This occurrs in all drivers since 6200 was listed as supported (starting with 7667? I forget) up through 8178.

To reproduce, simply install a MSI 6200 card with default settings, and use XVideo, such as with "mplayer -vo xv". I'm using the TVout on my card, in 1080i mode, I'm not sure if that's related also.

I'm attaching a bug report taken after the hang & subsequent reboot, but before starting X.

I discussed this in previous threads, but they have disappeared off the forum's listing. Others have confirmed having the same bug in those threads.

This is not universal to all GeForce 6200 cards, as I cannot reproduce it on the (non-MSI) GeForce 6200 that I have here. My GeForce 6200 has a newer VBIOS than yours (05.44.a2.10.00). I wonder if you're hitting a VBIOS bug?

Does this reproduce without TV out or without a 1080i mode?
Are the others who have reported this also using the same MSI GeForce 6200, or also using TV out, or also using a 1080i mode?

What kind of motherboard are you using, and which BIOS version?

Thanks,
Lonni

I don't know about the VBIOS, can that be updated? How would I go about that? I
checked the MSI web site and didn't find any BIOS updates.

In my reading of the other threads, it sounds like people only see this problem at 1080i, but I don't really know. The others will have to speak for themselves. They don't mention what card they use. This is the other thread with the most information:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=55064

The motherboard I'm using is an Albatron KX400-8x with a AMD Athlon 2600+ processor. I recently update the BIOS to latest, at your suggestion, and still see the problem.

It's nontrivial for me to try this without using tvout, but if I can get time this weekend I'll give it a shot, and also try TVout at other resolutions.

Thumbs down Re: texture adapter "sync to vblank" causes system lockup

I tried this in 720p mode, no change in behavior.

Incidentally, the card is AGP, not PCI-Express, if that matters.

My MSI 6200 exhibits this bug as well. The VBIOS version is 05.44.a2.02.00. I've done some testing using both component TV out and DVI. Both hang X at 1080i. 720p works okay, though.

Hope this helps. Sounds like we're getting closer to tracking down the problem.

Ok, after a quick search around the web, I couldn't find any bios later than the version currently on my card. fyi, PCStats has a decent article on flashing an nvidia card here.

Lonni, if you would be willing to post your working bios, I'll happily try to flash mine to see if that fixes our difficulties.

mvnoord, I have the same VBIOS version as you. Maybe netllama has found the trick. I too would like to try the later version.

BTW, thanks for the link.

I've found a means of reproducing this problem, and have opened bug 211455. In my testing, setting sync to vblank is not needed to trigger the lockup.

Thanks,
Lonni
