Unhappy problems with a Go6600 sitting in a Toshiba Tecra S3 laptop

Hi,

I'm having hard times installing Linux on this laptop. It requires a fairly recent kernel (2.6.15 with some -mm patches or 2.6.16). The GPU is a Geforce Go6600 with 128MB of memory and a 1400x1050 LCD panel.

With the Linux 2.6.15 kernel, I had to come back to a previous version (7676) to have it working. When using the latest (8178), the image is like rolled on itself horizontally (the 200 leftmost pixels are actually the rightmost ones) and is incomplete vertically (only 993 pixels visible).

Under Linux 2.6.16, only the version 8178 compiles after having been patched with the cumulative patch provided in http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=62021 . And when this is done, it gives the same results as under Linux 2.6.15.

Version 7676 does not compile under Linux 2.6.15 even when all the patches found in the forum are applied to it (see installer log).

Comparing Xorg.0.log files from 8178 and 7676 under 2.6.15 (see attached Xorg.log), it seems that the problem lies in the screen information gathering. 7676 correctly identifies a Toshiba internal LCD screen with all its characteristics whereas 8178 sees only a generic NVIDIA screen. I've tried disabling SoftEDIDs (in the nvidia module) and even completely disabling EDID (in Xorg.conf) but it did not change anything.

Now, about the reason why I want to use the latest driver on the latest Linux kernel, the 7676 on the patched linux 2.6.15 gives very bad performances. GLX gears sports 4000 fps and screen repaint is SLOW even in gvim. Also, the system stability is not optimal. I hope that using a plain 2.6.16 (when it'll be available) will get me some more stability and that the 8178 will improve performance.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide,

Olivier

The resolution problem with 1.0-8178 is a known bug (and has already been discussed in other threads on this forum), and will be resolved in the next driver release.

Thanks,
Lonni

Red face Re: problems with a Go6600 sitting in a Toshiba Tecra S3 laptop

Thanks for your fast answer, Lonni.

In the meantime, I had found on the forum another thread that had exactly the same Xorg.0.log (although coming from another Toshiba with another version of the GeForce).

Do you have any idea when it will be released ?
Will its release coincide with the release of the 2.6.16 kernel ?
Will it compile with the 2.6.16 kernel ?

Thanks again for your very efficient support and best regards,

Olivier

The next driver release should work fine with 2.6.16, however the next driver release has no assocation with the release of 2.6.16.

Thanks,
Lonni

Please, let me smile
Indeed it has. You will not release the next driver before .16 is released. You wanna bet? You're on the inside, and I'm on the outside, on the other side of the globe. Five bucks?

Offcourse you don't want to claim .16 stability unless .16 is a fact, we all know how fast things can break in constantly unstable 2.6. If that means you'll release it a few days after .16 or a few months later, we just don't know.
But with no .16 there'll be no new nvidia driver, I'm betting a french kiss on that.
And yeah, five bucks.
