Angry 8178 driver problem with XFX GeForce 6600

hi,

I have just installed the Linux OS , Red Hat Linux 8.0 with kernel 2.40(probably, I am not quite sure)and the latest NVIDIA-x86-8178 driver on my PC: P4 3.0G Kingston 1G DDR ASUS P4800S and a XFX GeForce 6600 GPU, AGP 8X.

I have followed the steps what the NVidia installation guide says , but still have problem : the OS can not identifies the GPU, it only tells me that the Graphic Driver has successfully installed , and the driver is provided by NVIDIA, but it tells me that the Video Card Type is VESA(Generic). It is rediculous! And I can not find the corresponding GPU type in the card type choice lists, there are TNT2, Geforce 2, Geforce 4, Geforce Fx etc, but No Geforce 6600 or 7800. The worst thing maybe I can not check up the choice in System Setting->Display -> Advance -> Enable 3D Hardware Accelaration. The only improvement is that the resolution choices seem to have more than choices before installation.

attachment is the installation log

Any help would appreciated.

kind regards
lua

I think you will have to read the installation instructions...
I have this same card and it works fine. But when I look at what you type above, it does not seem like you have read the README.

Try reading /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README.txt

If the driver is correctly installed, you dont need to enable 3D acceleration by the control panel from red hat. It is enabled by default in the driver.

to be sure it works, try this in a console :
glxinfo | grep direct
it should return you :
direct rendering: Yes
