Default Twinview problem with 8756 driver

I have a GeForce 2 Go card and run the latest stable Gentoo Linux. When I upgraded from 8178 to 8756 I found a weird problem with Twinview. When I go to the "NULL,1600x1200" metamode, the first display still displays its half of the screen. With all previous Nvidia drivers, a monitor that was set to NULL in the metamode would go blank.

This may seem like a trivial problem but it is very disorienting because the X cursor shows up on both displays even though it is only active on the 2nd display. The only things I changed in my xorg.conf file to enable TwinView was adding these two lines:
Code:
Option "TwinView"
Option "MetaModes" "1600x1200,1600x1200; NULL,1600x1200"
Perhaps I need to add some more things to xorg.conf in order to get NULL working again.

Please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 5

and then generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,
Lonni

I did as you suggested but the bug report is too long to post. The error message I get is:
Code:
The text that you have entered is too long (79444 characters).
Please shorten it to 15000 characters long.
Should I email the bug report to you instead? Or should I email it to linux-bugs@nvidia.com as suggested at the top of the report?

I don't see anything explicitly wrong in your bug report.

When this problem occurs, is the NULL screen actively updating, or does it just not blank and keeps whatever was present immediately before switching to the NULL screen?

What kind of Dell laptop is this that you're using?
Have you verified that you've got the latest BIOS applied?

Thanks,
Lonni

The NULL screen is actively updating. The X cursor shows up on both screens so if the active screen is panned all the way to the left, then the two screens look like they are in clone mode. But the X cursor shows up at the same x-y screen location on both screens even if the active screen is not panned all the way to the left so you always see the cursor on both screens.

Except for the X cursor, the NULL screen acts as if it were in "1600x1200, 1600x1200" mode. The active screen does exactly what it is supposed to do.

My machine is a Dell Inspiron 8200. It has the latest BIOS version installed, A11, from early 2004.

This problem is not a show-stopper for me. I upgraded to the latest driver (marked unstable in Gentoo) only because with the latest stable driver (6629), the latest mplayer stopped working with vo=xv. I think I could downgrade to 8178 or even 7174 with no ill effects.

But I am happy to do what I can to help if you want to try to fix it.

I have verified that downgradiing to the 8178 driver fixes this problem which confirms that the problem was introduced in the 8756 driver.

Downgrading to the 8178 driver doesn't completely fix the problem. If I use Ctrl-Alt-plus to go into the "NULL, 1600x1200" metamode then it starts out working fine with a blank NULL screen. But if I wait long enough in this mode for the powersaver feature to kick in that blanks both screens then when I wake it up with a key press or mouse movement I have the problem again with the NULL screen being active instead of blank. The only difference is that there is no X cursor on the NULL screen like there is when using the 8756 driver.

The key combo Ctrl-Alt-plus, Ctrl-Alt-minus restores the NULL screen to being blank again, temporarily fixing the problem.
