Default Help needed, GeForce 7900 GT not working

I REALLY could use some HELP from you experts here-- I built a new system
with a GeForce 7900 pci-express card, can not get into GUI mode, startx
crashes with errors.

When i run startx to get into GUI (X), the main errors I get are:

Using vt 7
(EE) NVIDIA(0): failure to construct a valid mode list: no modes remaining
(EE) NVIDIA(0): aborting
(EE) Screens found but none have a usable configuration
Fatal server error.
No screens found.

System is AMD Athlon 64 x2 4400+ cpu, ASUS A8N-SLI Premium motherboard, 4GB RAM, nVidia GeForce 7900 video graphics card (the main problem here). PCI-e power cable is attached to the GeForce card as it should be.

I downloaded and installed the lastest graphics driver from nvidia.com for
the 32-bit kernel, I have done this several times before on my old system
that had a nVidia GeForce 5700 card and it worked great, so I know well
how to do this.

I have a GUI access only because i used XFdrake to set my X server to "vesa" and not "nv" or "nvidia" so I can at least have KDE gui to do things like this.

See my other recent post, I submitted a report log, deleted some of it as posts here are limited to 15000 chars.

On a brighter note, I am now able to get GUi with the nvidia splash screen and 3D graphics, though slow (about 6000fps using glxgears). Still, it is progress. What I did was run as root
Xorg -configure
which creates /root/xorg.conf.new, a skeleton file after probing hardware. Then I tested that
X -config xorg.conf.new
and got a blue GUI screen and mouse function. So I copied that file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and started X. What is interesting is that when I start X the nvidia splash screen appears (white screen, amber logo) which if I understand that correctly means that the nvidia driver is operational??? However something is not right, because the glxgears benchmark of only 6000fps is way too low, it should be perhaps 60,000fps. So what is going on, what can I do now? Any help greatly appreciated.

The bug report should have been attached, and zipped if neccesary (what you posted with an X log, not the bug report).

glxgears is not a useful benchmark, as its results are heavily impacted by numerous outside factors. I'm not sure why you think glxgears should be reporting 60000fps. I've never seen any hardware capable of producing more than 25000fps. If you have a real world OpenGL application that isn't working to expectations, please provide the bug report I requested along with your benchmark, and your expected results.

Thanks,
Lonni

Someone else over on a linux newsgroup just installed a GeForce 7800 and was reporting about 70000fps, hence that is why I figured the 7900 should be way way over 6000fps, but of course I do not know since my previous card was a GeForce 5700. sorry about not attaching, I am new to using this forum. Where (path) would I find the bug report file on my system?

Still, I played a few minutes of Unreal Tournament 2004 (offline, instant action game) and there were pauses, choppy playback, which I should think would not occur given the power I should be able to get from a PCI-express GeForce 7900. Something must be amiss. What would be a more true way to benchmark the 7900, what should I do now to get the power out of it that it should be providing?

ok things are really working even better now. I used
#Xorg -configure
command as stated already to create the basic xorg.conf file, now I went a
step further and ran
#nvidia-xconfig
and shazamm I am in business! glxgears, not necessarily a benchmark, did
show about 3x the fps as prior to running nvidia-xconfig and so I went to
play a game of Unreal Tournament in Mandriva Linux and it played great.
So, deciding to live dangerously, I maxed out all the game settings to
their highest levels and the game played great, no delays at all!

So, my only problem now which seems minor to solve is that my X gui is
stuck in 1280x1024 mode. I want to get back to a mode of
1028x780 but can not figure out how to do that. "Configure Desktop" shows
only 1280x1024, no other display modes. Anybody have a clue how to fix
this and I am in business.
