Default All ModLines rejected with tvout

I have dual X display setup with a FX 5200 card and latest . It appears that any ModeLine I try to use on the tv-out is ignored (not valid). The "UseEdidFreqs" option appears to be ignored (although this was not required to set to false to use other ModLines with 8178). This works fine with 8178 but is broken with 8756 of the nvidia drivers.

Option "UseEdidFreqs" "false"

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor1"
HorizSync 30-50
VertRefresh 60
Option "DPMS"
UseModes tv modes"
EndSection

Section "Modes"
Identifier "tv modes"
ModeLine "800x600tv" 40.00 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync
ModeLine "720x480tv" 28.20 720 736 856 896 480 490 493 525 -hsync -vsync
EndSection

Users on this forum have reported that renaming the ModeLine to something "non-standard" will allow it to be loaded. This may work for a normal CRT, but when using the tv-out encoder, it does not work at all. It also appears that this new version of nvidia drivers has removed some of the resolution support for the tv-out. The drivers will no longer accept 800x600 as well as any custom modeline settings.

Has anyone been able to get resolutions to work other than the defaults for tv out? I would really like to get that 800x600 resolution back (it seems to best fit my screen).

Here are two logs from my system. The first log is using the previous 8178 driver and the second log is from the latest 8756 driver. Notice how 800x600 support for the tv out does not exist with the latest version. Also, I still have not been able to get any custom modelines to work for the tv-out. I have tried disabling all forms of EDID and nothing seems to work. Please help.

Cym,

Examining carefully your Xorg.0.log.88756:

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] rev 161, Mem @ 0xec000000/24, 0xe0000000/27
:
(--) NVIDIA(1): TV encoder: NVIDIA
(II) NVIDIA(1): TV modes supported by this encoder:
(II) NVIDIA(1): 1024x768; Standards: NTSC-M, NTSC-J, PAL-M, PAL-BDGHI,
(II) NVIDIA(1): PAL-N, PAL-NC
(II) NVIDIA(1): 720x576; Standards: PAL-BDGHI, PAL-N, PAL-NC
(II) NVIDIA(1): 720x480; Standards: NTSC-M, NTSC-J, PAL-M

This driver seems to have dropped 800x600 TVout support. Try 1024x768, or 720x576.

My card is the same as yours:
nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] rev 161, Mem @ 0xe8000000/24, 0xd8000000/27
and I was alarmed to see the blacked out TV screen too. My Xorg.0.log did not report the stuffs
above, and I couldn't get clue to it, but your post led me to the right solution: specify 1024x768:

Option "MetaModes" "1024x768,1024x768; 1024x768,1024x768"
Option "MetaModes" "CRT-0: 1024x768, TV-0: 1024x768"
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "TV-0 RightOf CRT-0"

This was what I wanted ever, the same screen dimension on both the screens, and one thing
that Windows NV driver can do but linux NV driver can't -- I had to use Clone instead of RightOf
in 8178 driver (you don't want a virtual size on CRT, right ?).

Thanks for you post.

PS. I do not specify Modeline to TV screen in xorg.conf.
