None of the backtraces in the kernel panic reference the nvidia kernel module.

Does this reproduce without a PREEMPT enabled kernel?
Which nvidia driver version were you using previously that didn't produce this problem?
Does this reproduce without the Composite extension in your X configuration?

Thanks,
Lonni

Does this reproduce without a PREEMPT enabled kernel?I dont' know

Please test whether this reproduces without the PREEMPT enabled kernel.

Why do you believe that i2c support is triggering this?

Thanks,
Lonni

Apr 11 20:06:34 Slack kernel: i2c_adapter i2c-3: SMBus Quick command not supported, can't probe for chips

For this,and for this

i2c_core 17744 14 eeprom,i2c_dev,it87,i2c_isa,dvb_ttpci,l64781,ves18 20,stv0299,tda8083,stv0297,sp8870,ves1x93,ttpci_ee prom,i2c_nforce2

this is with older driver

with new driver i see i2c_core in use by nvidia

With my pctv card and tvtime everything runs fine on my 6800. Is it hardware dependent? Using kernel 2.6.16
EDIT Its not bttv that you are using, if I see it right. That may be what makes the difference for me.

Bttv and dvb are different
bttv is analogic
dvb is digital and use i2c,i think
new i2c support nvidia break
something
But only is some apps, for example
mplayer dvb works perfect.

I also installed the 8756 and experienced strange things.
Apart the odd behaviour of the v4l applications, I got this errors ("lazy"
is the machine name...):

Apr 12 23:03:01 lazy ainit: Memory: Failed to release semaphore
Apr 12 23:03:01 lazy ainit: Error: No such file or directory
Apr 12 23:03:01 lazy ainit: Memory: Failed to release SHM segment

Apr 12 23:03:01 lazy ainit: Error: No such file or directory
Apr 12 23:03:01 lazy ainit: No such file or directory

Which appear _only_ with the 8756, with with the 8178, on the same identical machine, with same software.

Now, "ainit" has nothing to do with the video, is the Audio Initialization tool.

I re-installed the 8178 and I diff the log files of the two drivers.
Apart from obvious differences, I notice this:

8178 < (II) NVIDIA(0): v4l: memPhysBase=0xf0000000
---
8756 > (II) NVIDIA(0): v4l: memPhysBase=0x0

Now, I'm not sure, but a memory address of 0x0 might not be really correct especially when before was something else.

Right now the 8178 is installed, so no bug report for 8756, I attached the 8178, I guess system information should be the same, plus the Xorg log for 8756.
