Default X server crashes sometimes when xscreensaver is active (?)

I recently updated my system to Fedora Core 5 and NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8756,
and while things work most of the time, sometimes after locking my screen and coming
back, I find myself back at the login prompt.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old seems to always end like this --

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/Xorg(xf86SigHandler+0x82) [0x478552]
1: /lib64/libc.so.6 [0x34a062f7c0]
2: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so(__glXDeassociateContext+0xb) [0x2aaaab0eaaab]
3: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so [0x2aaaab0e9b03]
4: /usr/bin/Xorg(FreeClientResources+0x74) [0x4341e4]
5: /usr/bin/Xorg(CloseDownClient+0x1b7) [0x444817]
6: /usr/bin/Xorg(Dispatch+0x258) [0x44a5b8]
7: /usr/bin/Xorg(main+0x455) [0x432d55]
8: /lib64/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xf4) [0x34a061d084]
9: /usr/bin/Xorg(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0xa9) [0x432059]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

(in particular, the __glXDeassociateContext seems to always be there.)

My system has a Gigabyte nForce 3 motherboard and a generic AGP GeForce FX 5200 card. The cpu is an Athlon 64 x2 3800+, and I'm running the stock (updated) FC5
kernel 2.6.16-1.2080_FC5 for the x86_64 cpu, smp.

I assume that it's one or more of the xscreensaver modules that's crashing the X server
but haven't figured out which one or even if it's only one specific one. (I could hack up
xscreensaver to log what it runs, I guess.) When I run them manually, so far nothing
crashes, even when I run the GL programs, and they seem to be plenty fast (i.e.
the 3D acceleration is obviously working.)

Nothing relevant appears to show up in the dmesg output --

% dmesg | grep NV
BIOS-e820: 000000007fff0000 - 000000007fff3000 (ACPI NVS)
ACPI: DSDT (v001 NVIDIA AWRDACPI 0x00001000 MSFT 0x0100000c) @ 0x0000000000000000
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86_64 Kernel Module 1.0-8756 Wed Mar 29 15:12:41 PST 2006
NVRM: not using NVAGP, kernel was compiled with GART_IOMMU support!!

any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

According to your bug report, you're not using the glx module that ships with the nvidia X driver:
II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 7.0.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.2

I'd suggest (re)installing 1.0-8756.

Thanks,
Lonni

Looks like you're right. I guess that the xorg-x11-server-Xorg package was updated ...
# rpm -q --file /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.0.1-9.fc5

# grep xorg-x11-server-Xorg /var/log/yum.log
Apr 02 01:01:04 Updated: xorg-x11-server-Xorg.x86_64 1.0.1-9
Apr 13 23:06:11 Updated: xorg-x11-server-Xorg.x86_64 1.0.1-9.fc5
and yum applied it, overwriting part of the NVIDIA installation.

Thanks. Hopefully this will fix it!

I'm reluctant to tell yum to ignore updates to this package, but I guess that now I know to check for it I can easily do so if there's any problems.
