This problem is pecular to the Asus K8N-DL, which is a popular motherboard for desktop dual processing. Even though this is a popular board, I cannot recommend it for Linux at all. Mine eventually stopped working altogether.

To gnomegiant: You're going to have to use the silicon image controller rather than the nforce controller on your motherboard. Supposedly it's fixed now, but I'm skeptical.
