Just as a general question, why does the Nvidia driver installer require that X not be running when it is run? Is there any way to override this behaviour?

The main reason for this is I think that the nvidia installer wants to replace the current nvidia drivers (if they are loaded which the installer assumes). The X drivers require nvidia's kernel module which can only be unloaded when X is not running. Why don't you just quit X or use a different runtime level? (init 3 for instance)

Because I'm investigating including the installer as a component in an automated update mechanism. An option is to build it and package the result. However, it may turn out that running the installer itself on the system is more convenient. Because distant users are going to be doing this, it would be handy to be able to run it from within X.
