Question Two independant X-Servers with TwinView

Hi all

I would like to know if it is possible to run two independant X-servers using a twinview setup? I'm working on a project where I have a main display and a smaller LCD touchscreen connected to the PC. The main display will be the primary display where all the normal data and stuff is displayed and the LCD touchscreen (a 12-inch LCD) will be used as a sort-of programmable remote control.

Is it possible to have two X-servers running on one videocard (I'm currently using a FX5700LE) and if so, how do I go about setting that up? Any hints as to where I may find some info regarding this? Or will I be forced to buy a second PCI videocard?

Thanks,
ZX_SA

You can't run two separate X-servers on one videocard. It is possible though to split one card into 'two cards' (see appendix R of the driver readme) but the screens must run in the same Xsession and this is really not what you want. (you can for example move the mouse over to the second screen when you move the mouse to the 'border' the only difference with twinview is that you can't move windows over) In your case I would buy an extra videocard.

Thanks for your quick reply!

I guess I can try the method described in App R but it would be best to really have two independant screens. So I'll look at buying a second card. I guess that would be the easiest solution in any case

Thanks for your input!

well....
it would be possible if you have an framebuffer driver that supports twinview.
then u could use the fb x server.

i dunno if there is an fb driver for nvidia that supports twinview, and also you will loose all hardware accelleration this way.

Now that I think of it, there might be a way to use both heads in different X servers but that would be using the opensource nv driver. These days its supports both outputs. (not for tvout though)

It is entirely possible to get two x servers out of one video card.

Here's how you do it:
Code:
section "ServerLayout"
	Identifier "Layout0"
	Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
	Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"
	InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
	InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
EndSection
<snip>
Files, Monitors, Keyboard, Mouse here
</snip>
Section "Device"
#left and center monitor
	Identifier "Card0a"
	Driver "nvidia"

    Option "RenderAccel" "true"
    Option "UseEdidFreqs" "true"
    Option "IgnoreEDID" "false"
    Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"

    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Device"
#left and center monitor
	Identifier "Card0b"
	Driver "nvidia"

    Option "RenderAccel" "true"
    Option "UseEdidFreqs" "true"
    Option "IgnoreEDID" "false"
    Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"

    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    Screen 1
EndSection

What you propose aren't two X servers but two X screens. This should work fine for zx_sa but not for dawnl who wants a different mouse for each 'screen'. The only way to assign a different mouse to the other 'screen' is by using two X servers (as in startx for screen 1 and startx -- :1.0 for screen 2)
