Unhappy Install fails for 8756 FC5 AMD64

Hi, I've trying to install the latest driver for my Quadro FX4500 using a FC 5 installation. My machine details are:
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe, AMD64 X2 4200+, Raid0, 30in Cinema display

I followed the instructions on Lonni's sticky post and read through most of the relevant posts i could find but to no avail. I keep getting the same error as you can see in the attached log.
By the way, the .run package did not install the nvidia-bug-report.sh nor any other programs i can see. also, "sh --extra-only NVI*.run" does not work either.

Finally, i could not find an rpm for kernel-smp-devel for x86_64 only for ppc. Does it matter?

I've even tried to uninstall the xorg nv driver. Same error but now I cannot start x

any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks a lot,
angelos

I just added livna.org as a yum repository and did yum install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia. Pretty painless, although it doesn't track kernel updates amazingly fast. But it does mean sane automatic upgrades.

Ah, and as for kernel-smp-devel I don't think it exists. The x86_64 kernel *is* an smp kernel, so it should just be kernel-devel that you want.

thanks for the pointers, prefect42. I managed to compile the driver but now i cannot start X. I get the "no screens found" error but seems not to be related to similar postings. This time I was able to generate a bug report.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks alot,
angelos

angel2, according to the installer log, you're still using the original FC5 kernel. This means that you did not run all of the commands in my FC5 sticky post, or some of them failed to work.

Please post the output from each of the commands, if you need further assistance.

Thanks,
Lonni

Lonni,
I went again over the installation steps. I run
yum kernel-devel xorg-x11-server-sdk pkgconf
yum update
reboot
so, if I type rpm -qa| grep sdk -->
xorg-x11-sever-sdk-1.0.1-9.fc5

and if i type pkg-config --variable=moduledir xorg-server -->
/usr/lib64/xorg/modules

I recompiled the nvidia driver (in the 2054 FC kernel) and the installer went through its usual steps (see attached logs).
I also have Selinux disabled.
Do you think that the drivers are installed in the wrong directory and do I need to creat some symbolic links as some posts suggest?

thanks,
angelos

If you actually ran "yum kernel-devel xorg-x11-server-sdk pkgconf " then that's your problem, as that isn't the full command on the sticky post. You're missing the 'install' parameter, so running the command you printed would have immediately errored out.

Also if you're still booting into the 2054 kernel, then odds are your 'yum update' failed as well, as this kernel will not work with the nvidia driver (and that's the problem in your installer log).

If you need further assistance please run all the commands in the FC5 sticky post again, and post their resulting output (as I requested in my last post).

Thanks,
Lonni

Lonni,
thanks for helping. I did follow the steps in the post closely. i just forgot to type the "install" part in my message.
If I understand you right, the driver does not work with 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 kernel. But this is the only kernel I can boot in!
I compiled the driver w/ 2.6.16-1.2080 but as you might know, raid functions are broken with the 2.6.16 kernel. I cannot boot and test it w/ any of the newer kernels. Typical Linux waste-of-time situation. But everything works like a charm in XP. Thank god for windows!

Correct, the 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 kernel lacks support for non-GPL'd drivers. You'll need a different kernel if you wish to use the nvidia driver in FC5.

Thanks,
Lonni
