Default FBO incomplete attachment error

Hello, I'm trying to use OpenGL framebuffer extension under Linux (2.6.9, 1.0.8756, GF6600). Whenever I try to attach a texture to a framebuffer, "incomplete attachment" error results. This happens even when I copy and paste Usage Example #3 directly from the FBO extension's specification so hopefully this is not a programming error on my part.

I thought this would be a FAQ but unfortunately I found no relevant info on the net. Could someone help?

Thanks in advance.
