Default Kernel update has stopped Nvidia from working

I'm running Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.06. With kernel 2.6.15-20-686, the Nvidia installer worked, using the following syntax:
dave@homebase:~$ sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8756-pkg1.run --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules

However, recently Ubuntu upgraded the kernel to 2.6.15-21, and when it did, the Nvidia driver stopped working. Using GRUB, I can continue to boot into the previous kernel version and continue to work.

I attempted to re-run the installer shell for Nvidia with the new kernel. But this time it doesn't work. I've included the installer error outpur with this message.

How do I get the Nvidia drivers to work with the new kernel?

Will this be a problem every time Ubuntu updates the kernel?

Thank you for any advice.

Do this to get your compiler version:

cat /proc/version

and install that gcc if different.

Thank you for replying.

dave@homebase:~$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.15-20-686 (buildd@vernadsky) (gcc version 4.0.3 (Ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu3)) #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Apr 4 18:37:00 UTC 2006

Could you be more specific and a little more complete in your descriptions? Install what gcc if different from what?

Now do a:

> gcc -v

The system version of GCC must be the same version of GCC that was used to build the kernel [(gcc version 4.0.3 (Ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu3)) in this case].

Why no just use the restricted-modules package instead? It's the latest anyway and will get upgraded along with your kernel. No need to re-install the nvidia driver after each kernel update.

If you still insist on doing it the manual way I would suggest you remove the /usr/src/linux symlink. It should then look for it in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build .

Success!

I was only using the Nvidia driver downloaded from the site because at the time that I installed the card, it was not available in the Ubuntu repositories.

I went into Synpatic and installed nvidia-glx, linux-restricted-modules-2.6.15-22-686, and nvidia-kernel-common.

Upon reboot, I started the new 2.6.15-22-686 kernel (the kernel upgraded again yesterday as well), and Nvidia now works in the latest kernel.

I hope now that I'm running the version from the restricted modules that Nvidia won't fail at the next kernel upgrade.

Thank you for all your help.
