Default X doesn't start after reboot (1.0-8756)

After installing the driver, X started without a problem. Then I rebooted, and X doesn't start. In both cases I've ran with -logverbose 5, and ran the nvidia-bug-report.sh, so I can compare the scenarios. First thing I saw was that after reboot, the video BIOS version is unknown. Before reboot:

Code:
/proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0
Model: GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X
IRQ: 11
Video BIOS: 04.18.20.38.00
Card Type: AGP
DMA Size: 32 bits
DMA Mask: 0xffffffff
After reboot it's all the same except for the Video BIOS:
Code:
Video BIOS: ??.??.??.??.??
The second thing is that AGP status is disabled after reboot. Before it was:
Code:
/proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: AGPGART
AGP Rate: 2x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Disabled
And after:
Code:
/proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Disabled
I'm sure that's enough for things not to work, but why does it happen? Has anyone encountered and solved this? I've been running for months using VESA driver, and it drives me crazy. I'm also attaching the bugs reports. I had to zip them, since they're over 100K. Thanks.

I encounter a problem similar to yours. After installation the nvidia driver works fine, then at reboot, the screen remains black but I get no error message from Xorg, as if it was correctly started.

Let's hope somebody has a clue for us...

I had the same problem with version 7174. The driver and Xorg works after install but not after reboot.

The solution for me is to execute the file makedevices.sh that comes with the install package.

For example:
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run --extract-only
# cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1

and then execute the file usr/src/nv/makedevices.sh or copy it to any location on your system and make sure it is executed before the X server starts.

So this has to run on every reboot? Do you know what it does and if it needs 'sudo' to run?

Hello !

Nice try but for me it doesn't work... The device nodes are created but Xorg crashes as usual.

Any other idea ?

It looks the 8756 doesn't have this script. I'll try installing the 7174 driver, and if it works, I'm sure I'll do fine with an older driver. Still, if anyone can comment on what might cause these problems, please do.

Yes the 7174 version has it

I haven't looked in the same detail as the original poster nor do I know which distro he is using but the symptoms sound similar to that which we have seen many times with Fedora. The mystic voodoo that worked for us was to turn off the graphical boot loader for Fedora and then it was fine.

The 1.0-8756 NVIDIA Linux graphics driver release doesn't require the "execute `makedevices.sh` at startup" workaround needed with 1.0-7174. Two things to look out for with Debian/Ubuntu based distributions are the linux-restricted-modules and nvidia-glx packages; the former can result in conflicting NVIDIA kernel modules being installed to a location that takes precedence over the one installed to /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/video, the latter installs a script (/etc/init.d/nvidia-glx) that may clobber the NVIDIA software installer's TLS library installation. If you use the NVIDIA .run package, please be sure that the aforementioned packages are uninstalled and that the `nvidia-glx` script doesn't exist.

I have a 7900GT and I'm suffering from the same problem. I'm using Ubuntu (Breezy), and I can get X to start after installing the drivers using the nVidia executable, but once I reboot, X won't start. I have to reinstall the drivers to get into X. The log file is here:

http://pastebin.com/710577

Even though the log file says that it "Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!", the drivers are definitely loaded becuase when I try to run the nVidia installer, it warns me that drivers have already been loaded.

I have tried removing the linux-restricted-modules and nvidia-glx packages, and it tells me that they can't be found (I think I removed them when I first started trying to install these drivers). Can someone provide the commands necessary to remove these packages just to be sure that I'm doing it correctly? (Sorry I'm a Linux newb).

Any suggestions? I've tried just about everything I could find.

BTW: lsmod shows that the nvidia module is running, so I have no idea why X gives me that error...
