Default Failed to initialize nvidia graphics device - black screen :(

When I boot up 2.6.16 kernel , and install nvidia 7174 for my Geforce 2 mx 400 card, i get a black screen and this error message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

I'm really stumped on this one, and can't figure it out. The driver version says it supports geforce2 mx 400! Yet, I get these errors.

Its on the popular i810 chipset
