Default nvidia linux driver 1.0-8756 installing on debian

greetings. I've just "fixed" a small glitch in the new installer. Recent versions of x.org have their drivers in
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers
but the 1.0-8756 linux installer still moves the nvidia_drv.so and nvidia_drv.o in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/

so the quick patch is
(as root)
cd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers
ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o

and it should run fine.

ps: I'm using kernel 2.6.16.16, with a nvidia geforce fx 5200.

happy hacking

I recently moved to Debian's nvidia-related packages (nvidia-glx nvidia-glx-dev nvidia-settings nvidia-kernel-source). It works well and automatically diverts libGL(core), so you don't have to bother putting mesa on hold.

nvidia-glx depends on a binary module (currently nvidia-kernel-2.6.16-1-486), but you can just ignore that and compile the kernel module from nvidia-kernel-source (/usr/src/nvidia-kernel-source.tar.gz).

@lorenzo g: the NVIDIA installer requires information from xorg-server.pc in order to determine the correct installation location if a modular Xorg installation is used; on Debian GNU/Linux, this file is provided by the xserver-xorg-dev package. Installing this package prior to the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver installation will ensure that the X driver components are installed correctly.
