Hi all
I have a problem where after I install the 1.0-8762 driver with no errors, I can't start X server. startx from runlevel 3 gives me a black screen that freezes all tty screens. I don't even see the logo. I have been reading these forums(including stickies) for 2 days. My configuration is as follows: 1) SELinux is off (proof): Code:
$setenforce 0 setenforce: SELinux is disabled Code:
$uname -r 2.6.16-1.2133_FC5 $uname -m i686 $rpm -qa | grep kernel-devel kernel-devel-2.6.16-1.2133_FC5 Code:
$rpm -qa | grep xorg-x11-server-sdk xorg-x11-server-sdk-1.0.1-9.fc5.1.1 $rpm -qa | grep xorg-x11-server-Xorg xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.0.1-9.fc5.1.1 P.S If you do not help me I will kill my neighbor's dog. I have nothing against dogs in general, but I'm gonna kill the yapping little brat, and it will all be your fault. |

Don't kill the poor dog.
Are you using a Toshiba laptop? I've got the same problem in FreeBSD and Debian GNU/Linux since the first 8xxx driver appeared. This seems to be a common problem..... |

I also seem to be having the same problem, doesn't seem to be uncommon at all. I don't know for sure, but it looks to me like it happens whenever the nvidia installer tries to talk with an updated kernel. Did you guys do a kernel update recently? or install a brand new download/buy of Linux? I have run into this problem after updating a Suse 10.0 machine (where the nvidia drivers worked perfectly before), and installing the nvidia drivers with the new kernel and ran into this problem.
I am using Suse 10.0 and 10.1 (doesn't work on either), I heard it doesn't work on FC5. Any other tests? |

Yes I am using a Toshiba laptop with a Geforce 440 Go card.
Nvidia staff please reply and tell us that at least you have read this mail. Have you no concern for animal welfare? ![]() |

There have been quite a few other threads discussing how to configure Toshiba notebooks for use with the NVIDIA X driver. I'd suggest performing a few searches for possible solutions.
Thanks, Lonni |

Solved...Happy endings are just so wonderful. I could cry. I love you all.
Ahem..The Solution for Toshiba Laptop owners: To your Nvidia modified Xorg.conf file add the following line in the Screen section(probably doesn't matter where, but I have it just before the first "SubSection"): Code:
Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck;NoEdidMaxPClkCheck" Next, in /etc/modprobe.conf add this: Code:
options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=4 Code:
options nvidia NVreg_FlatPanelMode=1 Now reboot your machine, put a smile on your face and pretend you didn't just spend 78 hours dancing around half a screen worth of solution. ![]() P.S I suggest you make this thread a sticky. Lots of Toshiba owners will benefit from it, and other posts are confusing/contradicting. I also suggest a look at this if the above doesn't help you in similar context. |
