Default Problem: GeForce 2 GO (laptop) blank screen - NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7182

I have been trying to get my laptop to work with SuSE 10.1 and NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7182. All I seem to get is a blank screen in a similar manner to Bob Smith over on http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...highlight=suse

I have tried - the SuSE generic instructions at http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA

and the legacy instructions at: http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA#Legacy_chipset_support

and finally the latest NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7182 legacy driver from Nvidia.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-7182.html

All the packages tried are generic Nvidia packages and I followed the Nvidia install instructions.

I have attached the bug report thing for my attempt with NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7182.

Thnking it maybe a BIOS related issues from Bob's post I tried with and without the "IgnoreDisplayDevices" option - no luck either way.

Any help appreicated.

Did you try
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"?

Yep tried that, with and without "IgnoreConnected..."

and also the NVreg_SoftEDIDs and NVreg_Mobile nvidia command line module options.

No joy yet.

Sorry to read this.
But why do you use the legacy driver? I think, 8762 supports Geforce2 Go video cards. There is no problem with an (my) Inspiron 8100 and a NV11 card.

FIXED.

OK, what you need is..... (based on SuSE 10.1, adapt for other distros)

/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia contains line:

options nvidia NVreg_DeviceFileUID=0 NVreg_DeviceFileGID=33 NVreg_DeviceFileMode=0660 NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=2

(all on single line)

/etc/X11/xorg.conf contains the following device section:

Section "Device"
BoardName "GeForce2 Go"
BusID "1:0:0"
Driver "nvidia"
Identifier "Device[0]"
VendorName "NVidia"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
EndSection

Nvidia legacy driver version: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7182

/etc/X11/xorg.conf created using "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia (0 is a digit, not a letter!)"

Laptop make model = Packard Bell IPower 7000 series / NEC Versa P440

KEY STEP : nvidia module parameter NVreg_Mobile can be set to a range of values 2-5 for different laptop series. See Appendix K of Nvidia driver README file.

Thanks for the help. Great if someone could pass this info. on to help others - perhaps even if it made its way back onto the openSuSE forii.

Hi Tobyb,

Thanks for posting this. I've tried these changes but still no joy with my blank screen problem. When you get a chance, please post your xorg.conf. Thanks!

Regards, Bob

Hello,

I finally have the nvidia driver working on my Inspiron with a GeForce2 GO card. The solution came from tobyb's comments where it was indicated that the xorg.conf was built by sax2. That comment made me realize that I should try again my previous steps, but this time first remove/rename the existing xorg.conf, then use sax2 to rebuild it. Once I did that, the nvidia driver started working.

When sax2 is finishing up, it generally ends by stopping with a message, "sax: startup" but the keyboard is not functioning. I reboot with ctl-alt-del and boot back to text mode to make a few final manual tweaks to the xorg.conf.

I plan to post my overall steps to my original posting.

Thanks tobyb for the clue!!!

Regards, Bob
