Default What will the next features be added to the upcoming Linux Drivers?

I am very inquisitive to know what will be coming with the latest software, especially new Linux technologies. For example last year around August I was looking into XGL, even though it didn't work, but I looked at demo videos, a long period before all the hype.

I like the current situation that NVIDIA is in, the drivers work brilliant and I wish I binned my ati card I got, because the drivers are terrible.

I'll get to the point what new features, or if bug fixes will be coming to the newest drivers? Such as xorg 7.1 support, or any other enhancements to what is available currently. This would be nice to know.

With the recent aquisition of Ati, by AMD, rumours are speculating that AMD will force better linux drivers, one rumour was saying they would go opensource - highly doubt so. However, would this mean there would be more pressure for NVIDIA to out-rival ATI still on the linux drivers.

Thanks Mr Parry

I would like three important features for comming driver releases:

1.) support of XGL
2.) support of AIGLX
3.) open source licence

I hope they add deinterlacing to XvMC and Framebuffer driver to kernel. Purevideo would be nice to see. I use geforce6 and would like to see its features at work not in advertisments only.

I fully agree about those video features. For me personally, I consider video more important than 3D.
(I would even welcome the availability of cards that can be used for good quality video at high resolutions, consume less power, without especially good 3D functionality. But of course I understand that the introduction of 3D into normal user-interfaces will probably make those unlikely to appear)

I think modern UI will have a very hard time competing with 3d games on which ones require the most powerful 3d chips. ;-)

I really doubt NVidia is planning to release their driver's code.

On a related note, project nouveau (still alpha, unusable) aims at producing open source 3D drivers for NVidia cards.

I know... but it seems to be years away from a good beta.

Yes, but still, it's good to know the initiative is there. And it seems pretty alive too, so i'm looking forward to it. If i understood it well, they have this modification tracking tool called REnouveau. Looks pretty interesting, *and* informative. Anyway, time will tell.

Just my two cents. I bet the best outcome for all will be when nVidia and the Linux community will begin working as a team. This doesn't necessarily mean going OpenSource, but that would certainly help.

By the way, I did bin my ATI card for my new nVidia. Actually, I didn't. But I managed to trade it up.
