Default XvMC and HDTV : Is PCI-E preferrable over AGP ?

I have both a 6600 GT and a FX 5500, both are AGP (8x).
I have encountered difficulties while playing MPEG-2 TS HDTV streams with XvMC. CPU is an Athlon 64 3700+ and gets loaded up to 30%, but the rest of the time it's waiting for the card to finish rendering. This leads to the occasional frame drop.

Do you think getting a PCI-Express (16x) card would improve things ?

Thanks in advance.
