Question Cannot install latest driver for 7900 GTX

hi all. I am a real newb at all this, so please have patience. I am running Mandrake 2006 Official on a PC with 2 EVGA Nvidia 7900 GTX cards, RAM= 2 Gb, speed = 2.0 Ghz. I have patched the distro as much as I can at this point. I cannot install the latest IA-32 driver. Here is my very lengthy error log, so if you can have pity on me and read through it. At this point I need a lot of help. Thanks so much for your patience. The log file is attached.

It looks like you're installing/building the driver against an SMP kernel source, yet you're running a non-SMP kernel:
nvidia: version magic '2.6.12-12mdk SMP 686 gcc-4.0' should be
'2.6.12-12mdk 686 gcc-4.0'

BTW, there's no need to turn the install log into a PDF to attach it here.

Thanks,
Lonni

ok, dumb question #1, so I go back to MDK and download " kernel 2.6.12-12mdksmp " ? I get so confused with the names.

You need your kernel source or headers to match the kernel you're running. How you accomplish that is really up to you.

OK, I'm doing this the shotgun way. I'm downloading all the kernels and sources for my distro that are compatible with my current OS. From there I am going to try to match up kernel and source. I will keep you posted. Thanks for your time so far.

I think I got it installed correctly. First here is the nvidia installer log, with some parts snipped out:

Default Re: Cannot install latest driver for 7900 GTX

I didn't what other logs to post, so here's the gist: I had to reconfigure the X-system to see my card as just GeForce (fbev). None of the other options seemed appropriate, since the 7900 GTX is past even the 6800. So far so good, no crashes. Update: Ok, now the first problem, the program secondlife will not install correctly, states that it needs 32 bit color depth. Secondlife's a mmorpg (http://www.secondlife.com). Can I get the 7900 GTX to work in 32 bit color depth ?

You can certainly reconfigure X to request a 32 bit depth instead of whatever depth you're using now. You should probably contact the secondlife people about the game's requirements, as that isn't an nvidia driver issue.

Thanks,
Lonni
