Which list are you looking at where you don't see the driver?

I'm not clear on which device manager you're looking in, however the only place that matters is what the nvidia driver sees. Did you run nvidia-xconfig and start X?

by start X, I assume you mean inittab 5?

Yes, I did run the nvidia-xconfig. The device manager (sorry - windows terminology) is Display -> Advanced. When I probe the card, it brings up Nvidia (generic) and lists the driver as "nv".

Going to runlevel 5 is one of several ways to start X.

Redhat's tools have no awareness or support for the nvidia X driver, so you'll be unlikely to obtain useful results from them in this regard.

You need to run nvidia-xconfig, or manually edit your X configuration to use the nvidia X driver.

I really think you'd be better off if you read the driver README which covers every issue that you've encountered thus far.

Thanks,
Lonni

There was problems starting X - I had several errors while installing, including one which said something about not being able to find a kernal at www.nvidia.com, and asking me if I wanted it to try to build one. (which seems to have failed)

Does this have something to do with the update level of the software? (I'm running the base level at the moment)

sorry, simultaneous posting there.

I am reading the README, but as a Newbie, I'm finding it to be a bit over my head. It seems that some things are taken for granted as common knowledge - of which there is no such thing for me.

If you're having problems starting X, then please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,
Lonni

solid7,

ok, apparently since my last post, all ____ has broken loose. So. lets start with some questions as to what you have done so far.

You ran the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8762-pkg2.run script but it told you that it could not find something suitable for your kernel and it asked to build one for you. It tried to build it for your particular kernel but couldnt for what ever reason. Correct?
