Default Problems with installing drivers in Ubuntu

Ok. i followed the instructions on this URL as best as I can (relatively noob at linux btw)

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/newt...newthread&f=14

I tried setting my initdefault in the inittab file to 3, and it wouldn't work as well. The same "you have an X server running" message keeps happening.

I was wondering if there is anything missing or if somebody can give me a checklist of all the prerequisites. I really appreciate it.

I have a 7600 GT CO by EVGA if that helps.

Try "/etc/init.d/gdm stop"

I'm running kde, so would it be kdm stop?

Do I just type that in the console, because I tried that once, and the console gave me the message "/etc/ini.d is a folder"
