Hello,
the nforce linux driver ver. 1.0-0310 does not compile on linux 2.6.17.4/.6 (nvnet). Please see log below. Because there has been a vulnerability in the latest kernels upto incl. 2.6.17.4 an update to 2.6.17.6 is very important. Please fix the nforce driver to work on 2.6.17.6. nforce-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-nforce-installer.log' creation time: Thu Jul 13 01:19:30 2006 option status: license pre-accepted : false expert : false uninstall : false driver info : false no precompiled interface : false no ncurses color : false no questions : false silent : false Installer install prefix : /usr kernel source path : (not specified) net kernel install path : (not specified) audio kernel install path : (not specified) proc mount point : /proc ui : (not specified) tmpdir : /tmp Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface -> Found package NVIDIA network driver for Linux-x86 -> Found package NVIDIA audio driver for Linux-x86 -> Please select packages for installation: Selections: NVIDIA network driver for Linux-x86 (1.0-13) -> Starting install of NVIDIA network driver for Linux-x86 -> Checking for loaded module nvnet -> Checking for loaded module forcedeth -> License accepted. -> Skipping check for conflicting rpms. -> There appears to already be a network driver installed on your system (versi on: 1.0-13). Hi,
I am using OpenSUSE 10.1, kernel 2.6.16.13-4-smp and I get the same output when running the driver install. I've got a M2N-E motherboard and the forcedeth driver doesn't work on my network. It's a clean install (I've not done anything with it as I can't connect to the network) in case anyone wants to replicate the problem. Cheers Mark |

This is expected behavior. The NFORCE driver package is only supported on kernels before 2.6.16. Please use the in-kernel modules for the same support that the NFORCE driver package provided.
Thanks, Lonni |

I am using debian unstable with 2.6.17-beyond2.1 kernel. The opensource forcedeth network driver doesn't seem to be working with my asus k8n premium motherboard, so i am dependent on working nforce network driver, so please hurry up releasing a new nforce driver or a fix to the old one.

There are no current plans to release any new NFORCE drivers for Linux. If you're having problems with forecdeth, please start a new thread which documents the problem and how it can be reproduced.
Thanks, Lonni |

How can NVIDIA answer like this? It is a shame that still we see corporations denying support for Linux! |

All the support has been open sourced and moved into the kernel. I'm not sure that I understand why you believe that support is being "denied". Perhaps you didn't see the sticky thread:

If I undersoot correctly from what you said (please correct me if necessary), Nvidia gave, somehow, all the necessary support to the kernel developers in order to support the NFORCE chipset. In that case, sorry about my post. And congratulations for the decision! BRgards, Maxi |

Unfortunately, NVidia apparently did not disclose all information about the chipset, as it is not possible to use
- hardware mixing - more than two channels when using s/pdif - and, most important, mixing into dts! This is the feature that made me buy a motherboard with nforce2 and soundstorm. Now I can only use in with old kernels. In two years, neither the open driver nor NVidias driver has improved significantly IMO. If there are no plans to give the necessary information to the developers, then we must still conclude that Nvidia has dropped Linux support. The only nice thing that works is ac3 passthrough. Or am I mistaken and do all the above features work with the intel8x0 driver? |

If the support that intel8x0 offers me would be in any way satisfactory, i would never have used the nforce driver package from nvidia. It has no support for hardware mixing, only one program at a time can access the sound card. The network driver included in the linux kernel is okay, imho, but not the sound driver.
I was using the nvidia drivers for almost 1 year now, and they were at least somewhat better than intel8x0, though they were still using the OSS-architecture. Now that the development is stopped and we only got intel8x0 left, i don't think my next mainboard will use an nforce chipset. It's a pity, really. |

But what about us NForce2 users and Soundstorm? As Dr.Nix said, there is no opensource driver for the APU. (I am not talking about the ac'97 codec!) It would be nice, if NVidia gave out specs, so that we could get/create a decent (alsa) driver... |
