Angry RedHat 7.2 kernel update

I can not get the nvidia drivers to
work with kernel-2.4.18-27.7.x. The
system crashes when I do a startx
and when it reboots there is file
system corruption. I have applied
all of the updates that are avaliable
from redhat. I have a 800Mhz duron
and XFree86.0.log reports
Chipset GeForce2 MX 100/200 found
when it is working.

I am currently running the 2.4.9-13
kernel with the NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-1541
drivers.

I supect that it is because the latest
kernel-headers that redhat has is
kernel-headers-2.4.9-34.

The kernel-headers rpm claim that
the src rpm is kernel-2.4.9-34.src.rpm.
So I down loaded the kernel-2.4.18-27.7.x.src.rpm
and did a rpmbuild --rebuild on it. It
did NOT produce a kernel-headers rpm.

How do I get your drivers to work?
ATI is looking better and better.

Please visit http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=li..._ia32_1.0-4349 and download the installer.

As a precaution, you should have your kernel-source-2.4.18-27.7.x rpm installed.

After rereading your post, I should amend myself to say you need to have the kernel-source rpm installed that matches your running kernel.

I am 99% positive that the correct kernel source was installed. I am in the process of uninstalling and reinstalling just to make sure. Will let you know results.
Thanks Reece

If it still fails, please post a copy of /var/log/nvidia-installer.log and XFree86.0.log.

Here is the XFree86.log from when it failed.
I had removed the kernel and kernel-source rpms for 2.4.-18-27.7.x. I installed the kernel and kernel-source for 2.4.9-34. I rebooted into the 2.4.9-34 kernel. I then ran 'sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run' and it compiled a set of drivers for me. I started X and it worked. I then droped out of X installed the kernel and kernel-source for 2.4.18-27.7.x and rebooted into 2.4.18-27.7.x . I then ran 'sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4349.run' and it said it had a precompiled version and installed it. I then did several 'sync's to flush the file system and then started X. The screen flashed a few times and then nothing. CTLR-ALT-BACKSPACE did nothing CTRL-ALT-DELETE did nothing. I reset the computer, copyied the XFree86.log and then uninstalled the kernel-source, reinstalled the kernel-source for 2.4.9-34 and rebooted, I then reran the 'sh ...' and once again it compiled the binaries for me and I started X. Works fine.

So I do not have the install log from when it did not work I can do it again if you really need it.

Oh, by the way, NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.src.rpm and NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191.i386.rpm did not work either.

As this hang is introduced by moving to 2.4.18 from 2.4.9, there are some things we can check. Can you try disabling ACPI and/or any APIC support?

I have a ASUS motherboard. I don't remember the model number and I am at work right now. I have attached a zip file with the info from the proc filesystem from both kernels. I also included the nvidia.installer.logs from both kernels and a list of the kernel rpms that are installed.

It is not an ASUS motherboard. It is a M807 from PC-Chips with the VIA KT133 chipset. (VIA 82C305 Rev 3, Super I/O chip: VIA 686 at 0h:7h:0h) There is no ACPI on the board.
