Black Screen when booting

Hello all,

I'll have to apologize first off because I've seen various post in this form and others that seem to site the same issue I'm dealling with or very similar but I've been fighting this for 3 days and have yet to find the solution for my system.

I'm running an Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.06 AMD64 system with an XFX 256MB 7300 GS card.

I can do a fresh install of Ubuntu, install the Nvidia drivers using the nvidia installer, restart the gdm and everything is fine. If I do a reboot relatively soon after the driver install everything is still okay.

However, when I wake up the next morning and power on my machine....nada.

From just letting the machine boot regularly it hits a black screen with a frozen horizontal cursor in the top left - no ctrl-alt-backspace or ctrl-alt-f1, none of that works. From the recovery console when I try to start the gdm I receive just a plain black screen with no responsiveness as described above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've tried to build this machine several times and keep running into this. Even with the bran new drivers. I've attached the bug report log. Not sure how helpful it is as I can't start X.

It looks like X is hanging very early on. A few things that you can try/test:
0) Verify that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard
1) Try booting with the acpi=off and/or noapic kernel parameters
2) Test with a more recent kernel (2.6.17.x).
