Default Re: Installing NFORCE drivers in 2.6.16 and later kernels

Hi,

I have a little question about this closed thread.
Looking in forcedeth.c, one can read :

* Note: This driver is a cleanroom reimplementation based on reverse
* engineered documentation written by Carl-Daniel Hailfinger
* and Andrew de Quincey. It's neither supported nor endorsed
* by NVIDIA Corp. Use at your own risk.

If it is provided by nvidia :
1) why is it still "reverse engineered" ?
2) why is it "neither supported nor endorsed by NVIDIA Corp" ?
3) This driver in my kernel (2.6.15) is limited to 100 Mb/s (section 100 M/s in menuconfg), whereas it can normaly achieve at 1 Gb/s. Why ?

Cheers,

The original implimentation of forcedeth was cleanroom, "3rd party" code. That is no longer the case, as NVIDIA developers actively contribute to forcedeth. I've opened bug 250382 to address the forcedeth source comment that you noted.

As for the lack of Gigabit support, I don't know what menuconfig is, however forcedeth has Gigabit support. The output from ethtool would be the more official place to determine whether your interface is running at gigabit speeds. Note that the remote end would also need to be running at gigabit speeds for you to obtain them.

Thanks,
Lonni

Ok, thanks lonni.

PS : Sorry for menuconfig. It is config menu when you config your kernel
with make menuconfig.
