Default Re: X crashes, black screen (video signal still there), and have to shutdown and power up

If the system can't boot consistantly & reliably, then this really sounds like a hardware problem.

I'm afraid that I still don't see anything in the bug report that suggests a driver problem.

I'd recommend running memtest86 for at least 2 full passes to test the memory.

Thanks,
Lonni

OK and thanks. I am going to see if I can get another same card. I only had it for like two months.

Question: Do I have to recompile the NVIDIA driver after switching NVIDIA cards or anything?

Interesting. I tried something else. Instead of using page down, in Pan, to get to the probematic thread, I used my down arrow key. If I scroll down one by one (fast or slow), no crash. It seems page down to get a chunk make the crash.

I think I will share this with Pan people. It shouldn't be this nasty crash!

I have a few questions:
0) Does this reproduce with a more recent kernel (2.6.17.x)?
1) Does this reproduce if the VMWare kernel modules are not loaded?
Lonni, I found a way to upgrade my Kernel to 2.6.17-2-K7. I recompiled my NVIDIA driver and tested. It worked the first time. I cheered, exited Pan, and compiled VMware v5.5.2 modules. I tested VMware without problems and exited it. I relaunched Pan and tried again, BLACK SCREEN!

Argh!! I am looking to see if it is VMware modules. How in the world do I remove/stop vmnet? I keep getting:

# rmmod vmnet
ERROR: Module vmnet is in use

If I do a -f force, then I make a Kernel panic and cause a major computer lock up. Oops.

OK, someone told me: /etc/init.d/vmware stop ... I exited X and typed this as su. Went back to X and tried Pan again. Reproduced. Ugh. Dang it, I had it working once.

Unhappy Re: X crashes, black screen (video signal still there), and have to shutdown and powe

I just tried another GeForce FX 5200 video card (BFG brand) from my friend. Same result. OK, I am starting to think this is not a video card issue. Probably not a video driver problem either according to the NVIDIA person in here. Maybe a xorg with KDE problem.

I run Fedora Core 5 and have this exact problem. This problem started to happen on my Dell Optiplex GX270 about 9 days ago. co-incidental, that matches the installation of the newest nvidia and kernel versions. I never saw this happen before those new packages. The problem does not happen when using the "nv" driver in xorg, and that makes me pretty confident it is an nvidia proprietary driver problem, possibly a problem interacting with kernels in the FC5 2.6.17 series.

pauljohn, please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,

Did your logs say anything? It would be helpful.

What were you doing and can you reproduce them easily?

Question Re: X crashes, black screen (video signal still there), and have to shutdown and powe

Someone told me to try the default nv driver thatr comes with X.org. So, I changed Driver "nvidia" to Driver "nv". I retested, and no X crash. I did get an one second pause when saw the newsgroup threads causing the crash.

Now, I am thinking there is a NVIDIA driver problem or maybe incompatibility with Pan v0.14.2.91, KDE v3.5.4, and xorg files:

# dpkg -l | grep ^ii |grep xorg
ii xorg 7.0.23 X.Org X Window System
ii xorg-dev 7.0.23 the X.Org X Window System development librar
ii xserver-xorg 7.0.23 the X.Org X server
ii xserver-xorg-core 1.0.2-10 X.Org X server -- core server
ii xserver-xorg-dev 1.0.2-10 X.Org X server -- development files
ii xserver-xorg-input-all 7.0.23 the X.Org X server -- input driver metapacka
ii xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1.1.2-1 X.Org X server -- evdev input driver
ii xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1.0.1.3-2 X.Org X server -- keyboard input driver
ii xserver-xorg-input-mouse 1.0.4-3 X.Org X server -- mouse input driver
ii xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 0.14.6-1 Synaptics TouchPad driver for X.Org/XFree86
ii xserver-xorg-input-wacom 0.7.4.1-3 X.Org X server -- wacom input driver
ii xserver-xorg-video-all 7.0.23 the X.Org X server -- output driver metapack
Note: Didn't list the video drivers.
