Default Blank screen on TNT2 when X should start

I'm trying to install the 7182 driver on an older Pentium class machine with a TNT2 M64 (32MB video RAM) running Red Hat 9. I have updated RH9 with all the updates available at FedoraLegacy.org. One thing that's a little odd about this SP97-V motherboard is the onboard video. I haven't found a way to turn it off even though there's a TNT2 in the PCI slot. You'd think there would be something in the BIOS settings, but I don't see it.

I downloaded and ran the shell script that's supposed to install the driver. It seemed to finish successfully, so I edited /etc/X11/XF86Config. I changed "nv" to "nvidia" along with the other edits and saved it. I reset the default run level to 5 and rebooted. As far as I can tell, everything about the boot proceeds normally until the point where X should start. The screen blanks. Normally, after a few seconds, the X-shaped mouse cursor should appear, but all I get is a blank screen--forever.

I had to boot from the rescue disk and change "nvidia" back to "nv" to get a screen, but that means I'm back to using the RH9 default video driver, not the one I downloaded from nVidia.

I'm leaving out /var/log/XFree86.0.log because I'm not loading the correct driver anyway. I had to do some other editing to stay under the 15K character limit.

The Linux kernel installed on your system (2.4.20-46.9.legacy) apparently comes with a broken version of the change_page_attr() kernel interface. In order for the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver to work reliably, this problem needs to be resolved. Please see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=58498 and the README (the section on Cache Aliasing on http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...ppendix-l.html) for details.
