Default Linux driver for nVidia FX 5500

I have a e-GeForce FX 5500 AGP card. I would like to use the nVidia drivers instead of the X.org nv driver. I want to display 2 screens (on 2 monitors) and the nv driver doesn't seems to like that. I'm using the 2.6.11 kernel. Unfortunately, the nVidia driver needs to compile on my machine. I have the kernel headers that go with 2.6.11, but not the source. Why does the nVidia driver look for the source code? I don't want to rebiuld the kernel, just to install video drivers. Does anyone have the prebuilt driver for this kernel? Am I doing something wrong? Please help...

The nvidia kernel module needs the kernel source because it compiles against it, making sure that its using the latest code basicly customizing the nvidia kernel for your version of Linux. I would suggest upgrading to a later version of the kernel(such as 2.6.18). Most distros have a system to upgrade your systems packages such as yum, apt, or portage. Many of these distros also have availible binary packages avaible either officaly or though third party servers. If your running Fedora check FedoraForum.org and FedoraFAQ.org
