Red face Condoms dont work! The Vatican says so!

yes, youve heard right..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3176982.stm

Quote:
The Catholic Church has been accused of telling people in countries with high rates of HIV that condoms do not protect against the deadly virus.

[...]

However, the Catholic Church has consistently refused to back such calls. The Vatican is opposed to contraception and has advocated that people change their behaviour instead.
ok, old news so far. now heres something you havent heard yet.

Quote:
In an interview, one of the Vatican's most senior cardinals Alfonso Lopez Trujillo suggested HIV could even pass through condoms.

"The Aids virus is roughly 450 times smaller than the spermatozoon. The spermatozoon can easily pass through the 'net' that is formed by the condom," he says.

The cardinal, who is president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Family, suggests that governments should urge people not to use condoms.

"These margins of uncertainty...should represent an obligation on the part of the health ministries and all these campaigns to act in the same way as they do with regard to cigarettes, which they state to be a danger."

The programme includes a Catholic nun advising her HIV-infected choir master not to use condoms with his wife because "the virus can pass through".

The Archbishop of Nairobi Raphael Ndingi Nzeki told Panaroma that condoms were helping to spread the virus.

"Aids...has grown so fast because of the availability of condoms," he said.

[...]

Gordon Wambi, director of an Aids testing programme in Lwak, near Lake Victoria, told the programme that he could not distribute condoms because of opposition from the Catholic Church.

"Some priests have even been saying that condoms are laced with HIV/Aids," he said.
*takes a deep breath*

now imagine the minister for traffic in your country claiming seatbelts are unneccessary because they can rip apart and cause serious injuries. the catholic church is possibly causing the death of millions of people with their behaviour here. but as we all know the pope is infallable so it must be true despite what all science says. nice way of the good old human values in christianism. can anyone blame me for being an atheist?

now the sad thing is no (christian) politician will ever grow the balls to admit that the pope lies!

give aids a chance...

False conclusion. Your missed the ENTIRE point.

The POINT is, don't have sex out of wedlock. Was that so hard?

Not to mention that it is going to be more effective (abstinence) at preventing any STDs, *including* HIV. Condoms are not full-proof, or fool-proof.

The problem is people are not going listen to what the pope says and carry on to have sex anyway, and using condom is probably at best the solution to prevent transmission of STD, obviously it is not the perfect solution.

Why would anyone take advice from a group of old men who worship a fairy tale?

The big problem is that the Catholic Church has been spitting out so many lies for hundreds of years that you are going to have a tough time having anyone believe what the Pope and buddies say unless there are more credible people backing up them up.

2fast4u doesn't believe it and why should he? I am not saying that it isn't possible, because anything is. The problem is that the numbers just don't add up. There are a lot of people having sex with condoms and the Cardinal says that the virus can easily pass thru condoms. If this were true then nearly everyone who had aids and had sex with a condom would get infected. And the fact is that it is the other way around, rarely do people who use condoms properly get infected. I know of two married couples where one of the partners is HIV positive and they've been having sex with condoms for years now (3+). Bottom line is that the Catholic Church's statement is very misleading and very close to being an outright lie. Yes, people can use condoms wrong and they can break, but to say that they don't work at all is..........well, the Catholic Church. The Pope is pushing the Church's beliefs and people just ain't buying it.

That being said, I agree 100% that best solution is monogamy or only have sex with your spouse. But the facts are that is not happening and not going to happen any time soon because our society loves having casual sex and if you don't like that then complain to the likes of MTV who are raising our youth. You want free speech for everyone no matter what the consequences, you got it. But don't expect your teenagers to be neck deep in sex all week long and that a couple hours in Church on Sunday will take care of everything.

What is there to believe or not believe here? It's called common sense for God's sakes. Keep it in your pants and you don't get diseases or unwanted pregnancies. This is not some "lie" put out or "fairy tale".

Maybe I'm missing your point?

**Edit** Sorry, guess I did miss your point to. Went back and re-read all of schuey's post.

All this time, I wondered how the hell this icon would ever be used in a thread here...now we know..

Jokes aside, I have to agree with schuey74 here...The Church is largely working with archaic beliefs and practices. I'll never understand why anyone would listen to the Church in the first place...The figures wihtin the Church represent nothing ( IMO ), and are there to provide guidance and to organize the religious practice for a group of the same belief. How they somehow become demigods of science and such is beyond me...
