Sadr: Tortured, executed, burned and mutilated bodies found

NAJAF, Iraq (AFP) - At least 25 charred and bloated bodies were discovered in the basement of a religious court set up by rebel cleric Moqtada Sadr in Najaf's Old City, police said.

The bodies were brought up to ground level by police and Iraqi national guardsmen and could be seen lying in the courtyard, an AFP correspondent said.

"We entered the building which was being used as Moqtada Sadr's court and we discovered in the basement a large number of bodies of police and ordinary civilians," said the deputy head of the Najaf police, General Amer Hamza al-Daami.

"Some were executed, others were mutilated and others were burned."

A pungent odour of death hung over the courtyard where the bodies lay, their clothes soiled and muddy, the AFP correspondent said.

An array of beer cans littered the ground and a national guardsman said: "Look with your own eyes -- they drank beer and then they killed."

The consumption of alcoholic drinks is strictly forbidden under Islam.

One witness, Rahri Hussein, said he was close to the mausoleum when "a young man asked everyone to come to the court building because he said he was tortured there and he was convinced that there were prisoners still being held in there.

"When we got down there we found only two people alive, the uncle of the police chief and a boy. The rest were just dead bodies."

Adel al-Jazairi, the uncle and driver of Najaf police chief Ghaleb al-Jazairi, was kidnapped by militiamen on August 8.

yeah, sad isn't it.. still, its better to let a guilty man go free than to punish civilians for his crimes. This way there will be no destructive urban assault. Anyway, its not like the guy has been set free and thats the end of it. I don't think he will be forgotten any time soon. There will be another time to get him.

Don't believe everything you read. Chances are that the Al Jazeera news is more legit. Right now our government will do anything to make themselves look better, because this war is a joke and we shouldn't even be there. Check the link in my signature.

The media can't be trusted. It's mostly all spin. Think for a second. Why would a guy who is a devout Muslim condone drinking beer and murdering a bunch of his own men? It's more than likely that our military did drop some kind of gas in there and a bunch of guys were killed. Now they are trying to spin it. It's easy to do. That part of the city is closed off from outside Western reporters and has been quarantined. Our military can pretty much do whatever they want in there and get away with it. Once they do whatever dirty work they have to do they can spin it to make it look like Sadr and his people did it. How would we know? We get all our news condensed and biased on the News and most of it is all BS anyway.

I'm not sticking up for Sadr, I'm just saying don't believe all this crap they feed you. This war is all about oil and noone should forget that.

well, I don't think I agree with him on this particular instance, but you should read stories from the Vietnam War if you find it hard to believe that governments and military would ever do something as blatant as lie, and then cover their tracks.

A good book to read is "Vietnam - A Reporters War", by Hugh Lunn (an Australian reporter).

Indeed. This war is so wrong. I know Saddam was bad, but I mean seriously. The CIA got away with assasinating JFK and anyone who believes that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman is a fool. So if they can get away with something like that are you going to try and tell me that we couldn't have had Saddam killed too?

Our military is going to do whatever they can at this point to make the US policy look good and to make the Iraqi insurgents (people protecting their homeland) look like a bunch of crazy animals. It's called phsycological warfare, and if you read through our military policies you'll see that there are plenty of rules allowing our military to use these tactics.

Why do you think we have "secret" programs? They are secret so noone get's caught killing a bunch of people with illegal gas and making it look like someone else did it. It's alot more complex than you could even imagine.

This is why I do not beleive the crap I see on the news. I know that some reporter probably asked for the details and they fed him/her this cover story and they report it as news. Meanwhile Al Jazeera is probably telling the truth. It could be a mixture of both.

Our military is notorious for going on secret raids in other countries and murdering people. We are on record as having leaders of countries removed and having bought off leaders installed (Chile 1960's). Get real. In fact America is probably one of the most brutal military countries in the world, they just hide it from us on the news.

It's quite sad really, how much BS they feed us all daily. They try to take our minds off the truth by bombarding us with BS like Paris Hilton and Janet Jackson's nipple.

Ugh. Time for change. Wake up people.
