Florida
FLORIDA: -Approved: limit privacy rights of girls under 18, a prelude to any future law requiring parents be told when minor daughters seek abortions. This one really bothers me for some reason. While I don't support abortion rights (it's pretty well known I'm a devoted Catholic), I also don't support limiting privacy in medical matters. I can't imagine what it's like to be a scared young teenage girl facing a decision this big. I think it's her right to determine if she needs to seek help from her parents or her community, not the states. I voted against the measure. -Approved: repeal high-speed train project, which Gov. Jeb Bush says state can't afford. Thank God. That's an extra $250 million this state can stop spending. I voted to repeal the high-speed train project. -Approved: create state minimum wage of $6.15 an hour. This was the most racialy divided issue on the ballot. I've been hearing for weeks minority (especially black) activists groups telling the state of Florida to vote for this increase. I didn't once hear any of them mention where that money would come from. Here's a hint people: It's not going to magically appear. You might get a pay increase, but those very same people that have to increase pay are then going to turn around and charge you more for their products and services to get that money back. Good work Florida, we've managed to do absolutely nothing about minorities living below the poverty line. I voted against the minimum wage increase. -Results pending: authorize Miami-Dade, Broward counties to hold referendums on allowing slot machines at racetracks, jai alai frontons. I thought this would pass with a large margin of victory. Miami-Dade and Broward counties want to be able to tax and regulate slot machines. This money has one purpose; it will suppliment, not replace existing funds for education in the entire state. The value is estimated to be near $500 million a year. This state could use the education money. I voted to let Miami-Dade and Broward vote for the right to place, tax and regulate slotmachines at gambling facilities. -Approved: bar licensing of doctors who commit three or more incidents of medical malpractice. Had a hard time making up my mind about this one. There are alot of fraudulent malpractice suits. Then again, there are not (my aunt sued Sacred Heart in Pensacola for failing to properly stitch closed an artery in my uncles heart, which cause him to bleed out 2 hours after leaving the operating table). I voted against taking the licences of doctors. I did this because the law provided no recourse to doctors wrongly accused of malpractice who settled. -Approved: cap attorney fees in medical malpractice Voted for it. Maybe it will get the leeches out of our state and allow doctors to afford insurance again. What happened in your state? |

Colorado had two prominent ones, the electoral vote split, a %320 tax increase for tobacco, and a mandatory renewable energy source (something like %7 of all electricity sold is from a renewable energy source by 2007, etc etc)
Those I voted for, there was one really retarded property damage and right to sue referendum that I voted against. |

Do you have a daughter intercede? Would you want to know if she was getting an abortion? I'm sorry, but kids deserve practically NO privacy. Kid's with a lot privacy are kids who screw up.

After having worked in healthcare, for stuff like teen pregnancy I can see why teens need privacy when it comes to that kind of stuff. Parents become more of a problem in most cases, and even if it was my daughter, I'd be supportive of her being in charge of her care.

IMO, I would definitely want to know if my daughter was getting an abortion/was pregnant. When she becomes an adult it's her business. Until then it's mine. She doesn't like it? Tough.

Here are some of the measures that were voted on in my state:
Cyanide Mining Initiative - Voted down. Cyanide leach mining will not be allowed. Gay Marriage - Won. State constitution will be amended to define marriage as man-woman. Medical Marijuana - Won. Those were the three most controversial items.

My point is that parents create a more horrible situation most of the time. Besides, from what I've seen people at age 32 can't make a good choice on Dr.'s/facilities.

oldsk00l man, I'm having one hell of a time figuring out that statement. Parents create more horrible situations most of the time? OK, so what are they there for then? Why don't we just push kids out the door at puberty then? After all, they're more capable of better decision making then their idiot parents right?

There was only 1 referendum on my ballot and that was a question of charging an additional $0.50 on my phone bill for 9-1-1 service. I voted for it, but it was shot down by only 147 votes.
But there were a few others I was watching out of interest as a member of the media and having fellow reporters cover them. A whole lot of towns had tax rate increase questions for fire protection services - every single one was voted down. The other big one is a high school district I used to cover was going for a education fund tax rate increase. That was overwhelmingly rejected because the increase would have been huge (over $400/year for most residences). The school districts I cover right now didn't have any referenda, but one of them will go for a debt service extension next spring. |

I can't justify the State taking away a minors ability to have an abortion without the hospitals first notifying the parents. I hate abortions, but I will not stand even one young women dying because of a back ally abortion or babies being abandoned because girls are unwilling or incapable of caring for a child. I hate abortions. If my fiancee became pregnant tomorrow, I'd do everything in my power to make sure that child became my son or daughter. But I can't, and won't, prevent another person in a differant circumstance from exercising that option. Judgement is God's realm, not mine. Maybe my opinon changes later in life and I'm happy the amendment ultimately passed. Maybe I'm not, and I want my daughter to have the right to do what's in her best interest. That's why laws can evolve, change and sometimes dissapear. And no, I don't feel parents are 100% responsible for their children. I feel parents do their best to give their kids the best education, the best morals, values and options they can, and a child takes that into the world. Sometimes parents fail. Sometimes children just aren't receptive to it. And sometimes one bad mistake conspires against an otherwise good kid. Enough said. I voted the way I felt, and I ended up being the minority. |
