Default Tortoise Adopts Stray Hippo at Kenyan Sanctuary

Nice to see this kind of thing goin on...

plus nice to see tortoises I have experience with (those things are MASSIVE and really neat rides when yer a kid slower than a horse but a lot less painful)

aldabra is a beautiful place if anyone is ever interested in goin... almost got turned into an airbase during the height of the cold war but fortunately that never came to pass

A 120-year-old giant tortoise living in a Kenyan sanctuary has become inseparable from a baby hippo rescued by game wardens, officials said on Thursday.

The year-old hippo calf christened Owen was rescued last month, suffering from dehydration after being separated from his herd in a river that drains into the Indian Ocean.

"When we released Owen into the enclosure, he lumbered to the tortoise which has a dark gray color similar to grown up hippos," Sabine Baer, rehabilitation and ecosystems manager at the park, told Reuters.

She said the hippo's chances of survival in another herd were very slim, predicting that a dominant male would have killed him.

However, Owen's relationship with the Aldabran tortoise named Mzee, Swahili for old man, may end soon. The sanctuary plans to place Owen with Cleo, a lonely female hippo.
unfortunately this relationship won't last long... but still a nice story

Mild agnosticism —the view that the existence or nonexistence of God or gods is currently unknown but is not necessarily unknowable, therefore one will withhold judgment until/if more evidence is available. A weak agnostic would say "I don't know, but maybe you do."

I await the update that says Hippo sits on Tortoise or accidently crushes it.

Well, one doesn't see that, every day Oh, and yeah, the hipo is better off with another hipo, in the long run at least. I do doubt, after all is said and done, that this hipo could necessarily be submitted back into the wild again...
