Default 256mb gddr3 only available 6800gt and ultra. fishy?

I want to buy a video card. I want 256 megabytes of ram and I want the best ram available - gddr3 if I'm not mistaken.

The only nvidia cards available from any manufacturer that meet both of those are the 6800gt and ultra. If I step down a few notches (6800, 6600gt, or 6600) I wind up with 128mb of gddr3 or 256mb of plain vanilla ddr.

I suppose I could *gasp* get an ati card, but I'm afraid of change. I've been using nvidia since my riva128. Furthermore, I'm addicted to nvidia's linux driver.

I'm planning to bite the bullet and buy a g800gt. This will be my first time to spend >$300 on a video card.

It seems like *some* manufacturer should have 256mb of gddr3 available on a lower card. I don't know how a) all the hardware or b) all the licensing works, but could this be a limit imposed by nvidia?

Smells fishy to me.

Putting high preformance ram on a value card dose not make any sence, nor improve preformance.

Naah it's nothin' fishy about it. Don't think lower or mid-ranged cards actually make use of 256mb ddr3 memory ATi, I think, only uses it for marketing purposes, though it makes no difference when the cards don't even have the power to use even half of the ram but maybe it's just me...

People are getting the wrong idea when they think that more RAM = more performance .
that extra RAM usually help in high resolutions or games that specifecly takes advantage of it by adding more textures or extra frame buffer features .

oh & a GeForce 6600GT with 128MB DDR3 is good enough for all games as long as you play at medium resolutions . you dont always need more RAM to play your games properly .

have you checked the benchmarks ?? if not heres an example :

EVGA had a limited edition 6800nu with 256MB which I'm sure you can't get anymore. Gainward is the only one I know of that has a 6800nu 256MB card. Personally, I think all 6800's (except maybe LE) should have 256MB of memory stock. 128MB is holding the 6800nu back in higher resolutions in every benchmark review I've read. But if you can wait and save up for a GT then I suggest you do it, you won't be dissapointed.

Which is why a 6800nu is more like $250-$275 and not $360-$400 like a GT.
