Got the diploma mailed out last January, but the ceremonies were tonight. My mother and sister came out, though they had a hell of a time at the air port yesterday.
From 1 flight being late, to running to the next (and my mother's leg bothered her the rest of the day and into today). To then the next flight being 1.5 hours late... When the plain finally did arrive, they didn't get into Albuquerque until 1 am, due to all the delays and problems getting here. Then having got lost a bit, trying to find the hotel in downtown Albuq, they finally got to the hotel a bit latter. Only to find their room was given away, and they had to book other arrangements. My sister apperently was quite upset. Then today she needed new glasses, and lense crafters went from a 1 hour wait, to "wait another hour", to then "we did someone elses glasses instead, so wait another 10 minutes", which then became another 20... My mother and I were waiting outside so we could all go to eat. Anyhow, got home from the ceremonies a bit earlier... Anyhow, heading to movies now, so bbl |

Ours here at Stellenbosch are in the morning in December (in the summer) and it is normally as hotazel. I made the mistake the first time to also wear a blazer underneath the robe. I almost killed myself.

I just wore shorts and a short sleeve shirt. It was still rather hot underneath the robe, and I was sweeting a fair amount in there. Well, it's probably not as hot in New Mexico, as it gets in Africa, but still I guess you can imagine a bit...
The graduation ceremony was also at the UNM "Pitt", and one thing about their buildings, they use "swamp coolers". Now one of the things with that (though I'm not sure what the humidity was here yesterday), when the humidity goes up, they become less effectual. Course we were also in close proximity, so lots of body heat... Only thing I did end up failing to get... Because of the bit with my wisdom tooth having to be removed, I didn't get my cap and gown until 8 days ago. In the midst, I didn't get to the dean's office to get the stole I shoulda been wearing. Oh well, those who look will know I actually had honors, which didn't appear on the surface of it; and it can still be declared in a resume and all... |

thx...
Well, it seems my brother in law got a bit of a promotion of his own as well. Last I heard, he was a police leutenant. Well, my sister just told me, well yesterday now, that he got a rather big promotion to deputy chief... So as it turns out, the only local officer who ranks above him now, is the chief, which he might be on track to becomming should the current chief decide to retire sometime... |

My sister's just a little flustered. So she asked for a late checkout last night. And instead someone came pounding on their door at 9 am, and was expecting them to be gone.
After litterally being chased out early, and this after they gave her room away before she arrived, and everything else, she decided enough, and sorta wanted to get away from that area in the city for now. I told her that the experience at the Sheraton, which was also in a more convenient part of town was better when I moved out here, but of course she didn't know where to stay... Anyhow, my mother decided to get me a coffee table for the appt before leaving, and when picking one at this store, they went in the computer, then went off. Then they were like "the item is discontinued". my sister: Well, can you sell the floor model to us? sales person 1: Not with general manager approval my sister: Well, can you call him? sales person 1: No we can't do that sales person 2: We can't sell it my sister (already flustered from the air line, the hotel, etc): Well, if it's discontinued and you aren't willing to let us have the floor model, why still have it out on the showroom floor? sales person: Umm my sister (to my mother): This is ridiculous. You know they're going to sell it. (telling them): I myself happen to be a business woman, and this is ludicrous. I highly doubt you're going to hang onto a discontinued item, but even still you're unwilling to sell it. In the end, I decided I didn't want to go with a second choice, and when the guy walked away (and before my sister confronted them telling them how she's I guess in management herself at another store, and just what she thinks of this), that I had been rather put off. And after this bit, I really don't feel like going with my second choice, and continue to give them my business, after all of this. She quite well agreed, especially after her experience with the hotel, the air line, and now this... Anyhow, at the third store, things were quite different (and the sales guy there was shaking his head, that the other sales guy refused to sell the floor model on a discontinued item they can't get anymore), and ended up with a better living room table set, at a better bargain. Anyhow, from the third place; my sister knowing they'll deliver anywhere in the country, is almost tempted to do some shopping at this third store, and have them deliver it to her house back in New Jersey. Anyhow, down here in New Mexico, there are some styles and stuff, one can't find anywhere back east so... |
