Default Slow Down, To Save The Earth!

LMAO! Ridiculous!

Quote:
BERLIN — An EU official called on Germany to give up the famous freedom of its highways and impose speed limits on the autobahn to fight global warming — a demand that drew angry responses on Sunday in a country that cherishes what it calls "free driving for free citizens.

It'll never happen. Germany's Autobahn lobby is more powerful than the NRA here.

In the end we need a fundamental shift in technology to seriously reduce CO2 emissions anyways. Dropping the speed limit on highways a few mph isn't going to make a statistically significant difference.

It would probably make a surprisingly big difference.. but... IMHO it's not worth it. It would mean that it would take a lot longer to drive through germany.... And that would suck.

And besides... You have to be able to test your cars full potential somewhere

(Btw I drive a Citroën C4 - french cars rule - so I'm not being selfish here. I wouldn't be driving faster than 90mph anyway...

The drop in gasoline usage would be eaten up by the increased police patrols needed to enforce the speed limits.

There are cameras for those things now...

Lots of cameras needed, so maybe there will be pollution from the production of the cameras though. And someone has to drive around and mount them

Liberal or conservative doesn't really matter. I've driven down the Autobahn many times at a steady 130 mph (and once in a twin turbo Porche pushing 175+) and nobody should be deprived of that simple pleasure.

Man, **** that....... the longer it takes you to get from point A to point B, the more carbon monoxide is released from the vehicle, so if people were allowed to speed, there would be less pollution in most cases. If they didn't want us to speed they'd regulate the power output on engines.

That's not true at all. Vehicles have an optimal speed for efficiency, which is almost never wide open throttle. Gas motors have a fairly narrow band of peak operating efficiency, get too fast and you get outside that band. Also, rolling resistance and air resistance go up with speed.

Well... the quality varies a lot. Citroën Xantia for example never breaks down, while some others have more problems. C4 seems to be ok so far. And the design is great. I'm a little annoyed by the gearbox. 4 gear automatic.. Hence the speed problem. One more gear would've made it easier on the engine. And would probably have saved me some gas money too. EDIT: (and the environment )

Cars pollute more in traffic than they do moving. Easiest way to prevent pollution is to build bigger roads. Watch how the eviro loonies react to that.
