We've all seen the results of current games that where patched to support DX10 and we have all commented on how they suck for performance over their DX9 paths, with very little improved eye candy.
Then we have all made statements to wait for Crysis because it will be a true out of the box DX10 game.....but will it? Crysis begun development as a DX9 game when only DX9 hardware was released to developers and the general public. Only has DX10 hardware been available to the devs to work on their DX10 paths. So with that said and after thinking about it, Crysis is just another game that will have a DX10 patch, granted before the game shipped. I beleive until we see a game that has gone into production after the release of DX10 hardware will we see a true DX10 game. It also means that the game should only support DX10 to be a real DX10 game "out of the box" Don't get me wrong, I'm waiting for a real DX10 game so I can upgrade, however I don't think Crysis will be it, I hope I'm wrong.

I really doubt it.
Enabling DirectX 10 will enable more graphical effects. That alone will slow it down. If it just enabled DirectX 10 versions of all of the same DX9 effects, yeah it'd probably run better... but I don't think thats going to happen.

You're right. It will be a couple of more years before we will see games that only support DX10.

How much harder can it be for developers to add DX10 rendering and effects to a game.......
TBH i cant see many games coming out that will be EXCLUSIVE to DX10 and i very much doubt that crytek have made a DX9 game and stuck a PATCH on it ala Lost Planet (port anyway) and Call of Juarez. No matter which way you look at it Crysis will be a performance hogger for both DX9 and DX10 but thats what we want....If they released it and my single 8800gtx ran it at full whack settings at above 60fps tbh i will be pissed. Why? Because i want to be able to play this game in 6-12 months time and see added graphical features that i couldnt enable on my single 8800gtx because it lagged. Future proof the game imo ![]()

Seen the E3 Alpha version gameplay videos? Those are Vista/DX10. You can see an indication of the DX10 performance right there.
Crysis is being developed and optimized for both DX9 and DX10 at the same time plus there will be DX10 patches after the game has shipped to enable features that the current hardware can't cope with. |

If it performs only slightly worse due to the extra effects on 8800GTS or GTX I will be happy. If it has a significant drop, say from 50fps to ~30fps.. well that would wouldn't be ideal.
What I've seen sofar though indicates the former is more likely. Crytek know what they're doing ![]()

I expect similar performance in DX9 and 10 whereas DX10 will offer more details. I mean just look at WiC. Good DX10 performance is already possible.

I hope so guys, I guess I'm trying not to set my expectations too hight only to be let down when the game ships.
I would rather set it low and be blown away in the long run.

I expect to play Crysis on windows XP in dx9 and enjoy the extra 30% framerate. Vista and dx10 has turned out to be a waste.
I think the approval ratings on Vista are about the same as the approvals of President Bush! ![]()

You are great doctor!

I'll be dual booting until NVIDIA ends driver support for XP, so I'll be ready to go either way.

Certainly from what ive seen DX10 mode had higher frame rates (with dx10 stuff enabled). The way I see things is all previous DX10 offerings had been rushed out to take advantage of certain things, they had not been optimised as such and there for suffered bad performance. WiC and Crysis have been developed with DX10 in mind from the outset so performance will be atleast on par if not better than what DX9 can do. |
