Default Badness in pci_find_subsys, only in UT2k4

Hi!

I've just installed UT2004 and tried it with my GeForce4 Ti 4200. The game starts, but it halts for increasingly long periods of time whenever the game is in a 3D mode (such as the NVidia logo intro or in an actual match), making it unplayable. Each time the game pauses, I get a "Badness in pci_find_subsys" message in my logs. (I've attached the trace). UT2003 has the same behavior. As a test, I swapped out the card with a GeForce FX 5200 and had the same problem. I've also tried disabling AGP, using drivers 4496, 4620 and 5336. using NVAGP, turning off APIC, ACPI and the vga framebuffer, and finally, a complete reinstall. Nothing seems to change this behavior. Nothing is overclocked. Decreasing the resolution, color depth and complexity seems to make the problem happen less often, but the game is still unplayable.

The card works wonderfully with anything else that I've tried, including Enemy Territory, glxgears (~5700fps in 24bit) and other OpenGL applications.

System Specs:
Athlon 2400+
Asus A7N8X-Deluxe - NForce2
512 MB DDR 2100
PNY GeForce4 Ti 4200/Albatron GeForce FX 5200
Gentoo Linux - Kernel 2.6.2 - 2.6.4-rc1-love, compiled with 2.6 headers
XFree 4.3.0

I have the same problem on this computer as well:
Athlon 1Ghz
Asus A7V133 - KT133A
512MB PC133
Albatron GeForce FX 5200
Gentoo Linux - Kernel 2.6.2 - 2.6.3-mm1, compiled with 2.6 headers
XFree 4.3.0

The one thing that I haven't tried is a 2.4 Kernel, but I'd have to reinstall again due to compilation with the 2.6 headers, which I'd like to avoid if possible. I'm sure that this problem is related in some way to kernel 2.6/NVidia, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd be grateful.

Thanks!

Hey there, check out the following link:

Many are having the same problem. Hopefully it'll help you. I'm still living with this issue myself ... but it brings my whole machine down.

Thanks tamran, but I've looked through that thread. It's definately a similar problem, except that I don't see any instability (or these errors) with anything but UT2k4. I'm also waiting, hoping that the next version of the NVidia drivers fixes the problem. Thanks for the response.

After exhausting every other avenue, I returned the card. The new Ti4200 works perfectly with the 5341 drivers. No more badness messages.

So, you're saying that it was the card? You got the same brand and model? If that is the case, it's definitely food for though.

Well, sort of. I RMA'd the card with PNY and got the AGP 8x model in return. Not a bad deal as I had the older 4x version. Have you tried a different nvidia card? I swapped my Ti4200 with a 2mx 400 and it stopped giving me the badness messages, which is what led me to get the Ti4200 RMA'd to begin with. If you're still having problems, I'd definately recommed trying another card. Worked here!

Yeah, I've used an old Geforce2 card and had no problems of that sort. Only since I got this new card. I've got an rma # for my card and am sending in back in exchange for a different model. Perhaps I'll go for an ATI model this time.
