where are the hex cores? I am not changing sockets just to go backwards in terms of cores.

sorry about that. Does the E stand for extreme like extreme edtion or is it just a name. Also, am I correct in that the new socket is 10 pins less than the 1366 being 1356 for it's replacement?

1365 and 2011 pin sockets are the 2 that have been mentioned.

And E stands for E-pen0s

Why do I see 4 channels of memory going to the CPU!?! That's crazy...

That's a server/workstation chip, high end client will still be 3 channel as pictured in the Sandy Bridge EN diagram.

Intel has lost me as a customer. They need to make a socket and stick with it.

I'm also looking to possibly upgrade to AMD next year (mid-late), but latest news is that Bulldozers will require AM3+, so they are no better. It's just an engineering decision that had to be made.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/dis...forms_AMD.html

It's also why I've decided to stick with this crusty old Core 2 for another year. It's playing all games just fine for me. I guess also the upgrade bug has somewhat less of a hold over me than it used to.

As for AMD still only supporting dual channel in their client systems (server is 4 channel already). Samsungs 2Gb modules will be well priced by then and that will mean you can have both JDEC specified 2133MHz speeds and 4GB per DIMM for a cheap, fast 8GB. More than enough capacity and bandwidth at a good price. Rumor has is that AM3+ will officially support DDR3-1833, but like current AM3 boards supporting 1600-1833 already, you can bet higher speeds will be unoficially supported.

For example I bought this P6T in November 2008 and will get a new board for Sandy Bridge E in Summer 2011. That's nearly 3 years with the same board/socket. 3 years is a very long time in my opinion. A mainboard change would be necessary anyway next year, even if Intel would still use the current socket, just to keep up with the modern standard and chipsets.

Using the same socket for multiple generations is an advantage on paper. But in reality, you need the change the mainboard anyway at some point.
Totally agree.. i will be investing in Sandy.. havent updated since 2006

I also will be upgrading with Sandy Bridge. This C2Q/780i has lasted me for 3 years. I was debating upgrading to an I7, but I realised the Sandy release isn't too far away.
