hi.
Does the recently released driver 1.0.8774 support texture_from_pixmap or that is for the 9xxx series? Regards, Fadi. |

That will be a 9xxx feature. The 8774 driver is nothing more than a small release adding xorg 7.1 support.

Not to gripe *too* much, but it *has* been over 6 months since Nvidia published its paper throwing their weight behind AIGLX, and over 5 months since AIGLX was made available in a popular distro. I bought my 6800GT because of NVidia's excellent Linux support. But I can't help but feel that we've been left out in the cold on this one.
I've enjoyed the 6800, but I'm seriously considering switching to a card with open, and hence AIGLX compliant, drivers. That's not intended to sound like a threat, btw. Just honest customer feedback. |

I want to set one thing straight. You have ofcourse the XGL and AIGLX projects. The XGL project was about implementing an Xserver using OpenGL. One important requirement for doing fancy stuff is the texture from pixmap extension.
Second you have the AIGLX project which doesn't want to do all the X rendering using OpenGL. They want to use the current Xrender and Composite extensions. One major requirement to allow fancy stuff for OpenGL programs aswell is accelerated indirect (3d) rendering. The standard opensource drivers use 'direct rendering' to bypass the Xserver for rendering. No opensource driver support this. This is what the aiglx project is about. The nvidia drivers don't need all these aiglx changes as they have accelerated indirect rendering since the beginning(!). The only reason why 'AIGLX' doesn't work yet is because of the texture from pixmap extension. The reason why compiz and friends work in combination with XGL is because in case of XGL texture from pixmap is emulated using Mesa. |

To be fair many free drivers don't implement AIGLX either. Nor do ATI support this feature. I was far more pissed off about the lack of support for Xorg 7.1's ABI, but now we have that, we'll just have to wait for the shiny stuff.

I have used Xgl and agree with NVidia's position that it is not the right solution. Having 2 X servers running all the time and then starting yet a 3rd one to play a game is decidedly klugy. I don't mean to harp. (Well, not much anyway.) ![]() NVidia's Linux support has been excellent, all things considered. But one could have hoped for quicker action in this case. Hopefully it won't be too much longer. An ETA *would* be nice. BTW, I just checked. And not as many free drivers support AIGLX as I had thought. (I thought I read somewhere that all free drivers that supported DRI also supported AIGLX, but apparently I was incorrect.) |

Micheal from phoronix believes the 9 series drivers will arrive in Sept.
I want to know if the drivers will work with the upcoming X.org 7.2? have the X.org boys finished breaking the API? |

Accelerated Indirect rendering is technically a feature of the NVIDIA driver internally, but for it to be useful in the context of AIGLX, the GLX_texture_from_pixmap extension IS required, which isn't currently implemented. So no, you can't run Compiz or a patched Metacity on a regular X.org server; you have to use an XGL (nested, most likely) or wait for a newer driver. |
