Yes they share a front end, one that's 50% more capable than K10's. Same story with the FP unit, it can be seen as one big shared 256-bit unit, or two 128-bit units similar (not the same) to K10's. You do have a point about sharing the front end though and we will just have to wait and see how that goes. AMD state that this module approach gives 90% of the performance of a theoretical non-modular BD with dedicated hardware in each core.

There are clearly going to be downsides, but also many upsides to performance, not just power and die size savings; like shared L2 cache between 2 cores. Single threaded app's will have access to a whole 2MB of L2 cache.

If you compare modules to cores, then yes, it clearly is for current apps (non AVX). Of course this requires AMD to face an 8 core against a 4 core and 16 against 8 in server when it comes to FP workloads. BD's FP unit may just be able to contend with an extra two SB units in both segments, however (8 vs 6 and 16 vs 10).

SB also uses the integer cores to aid with 256-bit AVX instructions. If you're just doing AVX instructions, that's fine, but normal workloads rarely do one thing. Having the FPU dedicated to doing all the FP work and allowing the integer units to remain free is a bonus for efficiency for BD. Now, whether BD has enough schedulers for the integer units to perform heavy tasks simultaneously to the FPU is yet to be seen.

If the BD 8-core is going to go head-to-head with Intel's Gulftown, then it will be priced in its league. If it's got no chance in hell, then it will be priced lower. But AMD isn't going to deliberately kill their margins just to claim some market share -- they're going to do this thing called product segmentation!

I'm not totally convinced that these prices are correct. You're telling me that I can pay less-than-double for an 8 core over a 4 core? Please.

Ok, now seriously... yes, those prices ARE reasonable, and let me show you why...

This is a snapshot of today's price list for the online shop I usually use (the ALTERNATE group):

If the rumours are true, $290 equates to (roughly) 206 euros, which is just 14-15 euros more expensive than their current top-of-the-line 1100T, so it's quite right in my eyes, no confussion here. In this same shop, a Core i5 2500 is 182.90 euros, while a 2600 is around 254 euros, so again... it sounds like the right price, about the same in the AMD field and below the Intel one, so I don't think it's wrong.

People are concerned that the pricing means it may not outperform current SB, which is a concern because the high end SB's aren't even out yet. Of course price doesn't mean everything, as someone said earlier, the 4870 from AMD was an example of a recent product that performed close to the competitors much more expensive product and forced them to reduce their prices. We might see the same thing here. BD could outperform SB in many tests (I doubt it would in everything) and hold its own against SB-E, forcing Intel to lower prices.

I think they will be more or less on par with SB but are cheaper, AMD doesn't have Intel marketing get products sold to consumers. They typically under price their products for word and mouth momentam.

Hmm, 7th of June. I was about to pick up a PII X6 1055, a Gigabyte GA-880G and 4GB OCz 1333C7 memory. Might still do atleast i could have this as a media centre system when BD comes out. But i really need rid of this Athlon XP crap i can't even play videos on youtube at 360p rez

There is a slide I saw somewhere and amd is basically matching up their fx series against sandy bridge 1155 not socket 1366. and like others said, that's the price range of sandy bridges in comparison. But I thought the fx series was supposed to take on the 1366 chips?

They've been delayed till "late summer" to launch the same time as the server parts so I doubt that's legit. I think it has to do with capacity... Llano is launching now on the same process and they need to make as many as they possibly can.
