Its a little more money than the 780i but worth it IMO

I don't think it's worth $60.00 more, I still have a 680i and it works good up to the Q6700 cpu's, 780i works good with the newer quads.

I had all three and the 790i is worth $100 more..the board was flawless.

The xfx 780i is 99.00 at tiger direct
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...971&CatId=1533
And the 790i is 159.00 thats 60.00 more
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...541&CatId=1533
Also go to evga forums the 790i as the 780i have problems, usally users error.
Plus the 790i is ddr3, and the 780i is ddr2 which he already has.

I meant its worth a $100 more...not it is.

He asked for good recommendations and I gave him one of the best...the op never mentioned anything about ram.

I had really good luck with the eVGA 750i FTW. Was stable as a rock, ran cooler, and is much cheaper than the 780 boards. The few features you'd be losing are worth it for the extra stability and cash savings imho

I got a MSI Pn 750i with two 8800gtx's on it in SLI and a e8400 at 4.0ghz. on it, running Win XP32bit for awhile now, good motherboard chipset etc. I got a zerotherm heatsink on the cpu idles at 30C only needed 1.30 volts to get to 4.0ghz.

hmm it's really tempting.

I like the 780i that was posted from tigerdirect, I'm just not sure if SLI and another GTX 285 is worth the investment... It would be so fast but a shame with only a 22" monitor... I am thinking of upgrading soon whcih would mean much more than 1680x1050, but... no clue when it will really be

I thought you had another 285, sorry I misread your post. I don't recommend going through all the upgrading if you are using a 22". My 280@700/1400/2600 plays pretty much everything like butter@1920 so unless you grab a bigger display it would mostly be a waste imho. If anything try to OC your cpu a little more.
I also run the same mobo as yours in my main rig and love it to death, its a rock! If you really want more power and something that could handle a 24" later on I would suggest selling your current 285 while its still worth something and filling in for a new 5870 or even a GTX295 if it was cheaper. I think you'd spend less and be happier overall.

Default Re: LGA775 - SLI motherboard

My overall train of thought was "hmm, 295s are going to go down alot when the 300 series hits"... to "well SLI 285's would be better... and I already have one" so I started the hunt for a board...

I really appreciate all of your input but I think I've realized that sli on a LGA 775 platform isn't nearly as pleasant as with the new x58 chipsets... and more than likely the cost of an sli board and another 285 would probably be about the same performance and cost of just getting a 300 series and selling off this current 285.

sadly my cpu / motherboard platform in general is going to be more limiting than anything else pretty soon
