I bet there will be no X2 until we see new cards from nV....

Here's a discouraging rumor that's been floating around the 'net: Evidently two RV870 GPUs at 5870 speeds consume to much power and ATI supposedly has to down clock the gpus' and memory to 725/1000 on the 5970. Lets hope its just rumor.

Lies, the 5870 consumes virtually the same amount of power as the 4870.
There is quite the shortage of chips, had mine ordered since late October and I expect I'll have to wait at least another week or so.

Single 5870 uses less power than a 4870.....why would 2 5870's use more power than 2 4870's???

That's just FUD...

Here in Spain you can still find 5870s and 5850s in stock at some online shops. Pccomponentes.com shows XFX, PowerColor and Asus cards in stock. I think those guys have been really smart and got tons of cards. I may visit them later today to have a look, the shop is near where I live.

Really, it doesn't add up. But benchmarking sites in Europe are picking up on it. Here's another one:

Look at the clock speeds posted for the 5970. 725 MHz GPU and 1000 MHz MEM, those are the clocks of the 5850, and not the 5870 (850 MHz GPU and 1200 MHz MEM). Maybe the 5970 is clocked at lower speeds because of heat and power issues, but this would mean that the 5950 would be clocked even lower.

It may be that they will be using 2 X 1440SP in the 5970 and 2 X 1600SP will be saved in case they need to release the HD5990.

AMD really has covered all the bases on this release, and I'm sure they're holding some performance back, both thru drivers and in the silicon, so when the new nV cards are released they can unleash the extra power to stay more competitive.

IDK it's all speculation.

I just don't see 2 of the same chip using drastically more power, unless it's an issue with the bridge chip and the additional memory.

Again, just because a rumor is repeated doesn't make it anymore valid.

Think about it this way: If AMD can't get 2 of it's smaller very energy efficient GPU's to run at full speed on the dual card, what chance does nV have with getting 2 monster Fermi cores to play nice on a dual board?

Maybe they're going to release a 5950 first at those clocks and with 1440x2 SP's. Then next year they can release a 5970. If they called it the 5970 with those specs I'd be a bit annoyed....
